well being this is my first post I'd best introduce myself, my name is Chuck but I get called Hooks because I have two prosthetic arms from an electrical accident 20 years ago, I started riding again when my soul just wouldn't let me stay off two wheels any more. I took a yamaha virago and adapted a piece to the clutch handle then made a gas pedal beside the foot brake. I still remember sitting on top of that hill the first day thinking damn I don't have any arms and now I'm gonna be in a wheel chair too if this don't work anyway I slowly let out the clutch and off I went, I've been riding every since. I've gone through a couple bikes that I've built out of buckets and boxes the first being a 72 sporty, sold her and bought a 61 pan chopper that was in pieces after ridding her for about a year I ended up with a 68 Electraglide that was in boxes, I shaped and molded and built her to keep the rest of my riding life but seems someone else wanted her more then me cause after she was finished I rode her for about 4 months before she was stolen and never saw it again, thats been 6 years now maybe I'll find another cheap basket case one day but they gotten hard to find cheap anymore lol.
if I can figure out how to upload pics I'll put them up

Super cool man.

I know of another "Hooks" in a similar boat. He had an accident while working on some high tension power lines and had both his arms blown off. He now rides a V-Rod trike in a group called the Goatheads with my dad. Inspirational stuff for sure.

yep I've been an artist all my life, after my accident I was looking to see what I could still do then I saw Bob Ross on the public net work channel doing paintings I tried it and have been doing oils every since, here recently I have been messing with air brushes and have been doing some pretty good stuff.

You also remind me of a guy I met 15yrs ago in Cherokee NC. No arms thanks to a trip to Nam, and he was so good with his hooks he could take the ash of a cig out of your mouth whole. The girls all had pinch marks on there ass's from him too.

Ride on!!

... I get called Hooks because I have two prosthetic arms from an electrical accident 20 years ago, ...

When i was in elementary school back in the 50s, one of the kids John was climbing on a hydro tower. Same result - two prosthetic arms and he caught the name Jonny Hook.

I by chance saw him again about 5 or 10 years ago. He and i were not close friends back then, but he was easily recognizeable, eh. So we chatted for a bit. He has had a pretty good life. He spends some time helping kids who have gotten de-limbed or whatever.

thats great the guy is helping kids out like that, I help some of the vets here that have lost limbs from war, I do custom painting with airbrushes so allot of the time I'll end up painting a prosthetic leg or arm. nice to meet ya bro

Second off, you rock.

You remind me of a friend of my family when I was a kid. Was injured in a car wreck and was paralyzed from the next down. He'd lay in his bed and "draw" with his mouth and his work was just amazing. He passed away some time ago and I can't find any of his work online but it was better than anything I could ever do with two hands.

The British bikes use a different diameter (although I can't remember- 7/8 maybe?) so he'd have to change risers and grips, handle bar controls, if he went that route. Rep for the offer if I can give you any more :D

well with an auto clutch you can't just roll it to see if its in gear cause it will always feel like its in neutral even in gear till you hit around 1200 rpms that when it engages

I should've known this. I've ridden an Indian with a centrifugal clutch several times. I always start my bike in neutral with the clutch pulled in. Doesn't do a thing for the Indian. Now I just feel stupid for posting that.

Good thing that ya tossed that stuff. Old Man Lucas is famously quoted as having said, 'A proper gentleman does not go motoring around after dark." His philosophy kinda explains it all!

Nice to see ya putting a trumpet together. Nuthin' sounds (or vibrates!) quite like a parallel twin - enjoy yer super bad Brit chopper. Pure D motorsickle goodness distilled to the basics.

Gotta like the artwork on yer arms - waaay better than tattoos! A couple closeup shots of that artwork and a few of yer other pieces sure would class this thread up a bunch. If y'all don't mind showin' 'em, there's an awful lot of us that would enjoy seeing 'em...

as some of you know I'm putting an auto clutch in this bike and I started thinking if I kick this thing over and burp the throttle, if this thing isn't in neutral its gonna take off without me :frownthre so I started looking into doing a neutral switch in the trans, I think if I come from over head of the cam plate and drill and tap a hole in the trans case I can get it to work http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo140/hooks2u45/plunger.jpg (http://s369.photobucket.com/user/hooks2u45/media/plunger.jpg.html)

Glad to meet you, sir. How's the clutch coming along?
I wired the neutral switch into the ignition of a 45 servicar (elec start) so it would not start unless in neutral but it already had the switch in the tranny top. EFM auto clutch is next on my list.
Much respect to you! I'm in a chair and do OK but I'd be lost without my hands.

I don't think an adapter would be possible: the thread diameters are almost the same (0.7mm difference).

Have you thought about selling the risers you have and buying some that are threaded ½" - 20 UNF?

Don't know a thing about front end stuff, but I'm glad you got to keep your kids! Motorcycles are great and all that, but being with your kids is priceless! Rep to you for fighting to keep them!

Glad things with the kids worked out for you!
All the autoclutch companies either quit making them for Sporties or closed up except for EFM. You've got a Triumph now or do you want the Autoclutch for something else (Sportster?).
There may be some used ones around because not everyone likes them if they don't have to use one. Buddy of mine has a Triumph indie shop, let me know what you're looking for.

Hooks.... glad to see you back here......

you are truely an inspiration , not only to others who have lost limbs but to everybody.....just so ya know, I build/ fabricate custom cars, trucks and minivans adapted specifically for handicap people...... lowered floor minivans with automatic doors, ramps, hand controls, foot controls, magic seats that power out of the car so a person can transfer and power back in.....

I would love to see up close some of your work especially the motorcycle controls

thats awesome buddy, I mostly do motorcycles and 4 wheelers for people, back in 95 I was in a rehab center for handicap taking autocad classes, I asked about getting back on a bike and they laughed and said thats impossible I got to laugh back in their faces a month later when I rode the yamaha virago and asked for the rehab engineers job lol

I love this bike but I'm starting to wish I had started building a sportster instead, it would have been easier on me to set everything up and I would have been riding it by now lol
