View Full Version : Hi all!

I am getting my first (running, lol) bike tomorrow. Its an '86 883 Sporty, pretty stock. I am getting it from a former coworker for $2000... pretty sweet deal.

As for me personally, I am 28, was in the Army for a few years in the Infantry. I'm married with 2 kids, a boy and a girl, and live in Orange VA... I went to Rolling Thunder last year on my uncles bike, and the goal this year is to have my own. I've also ridden with the Patriot Guard. My Dad had a '67 XL when I was a kid, and he got me hooked. Can't wait to pick mine up...

Some questions about the 883...

The 1200 upgrade, is it a pretty easy install? I was thinking I would ride the bike as is through the summer, and then buy one of the upgrade kits over the winter next year. Is there a concensus on what the best kit is? There are a lot of "direct bolt up kits" on eBay pretty cheap, but that sends warning flags off to me. Do you have to balance the bottom end when you do the swap?

Also, I want to put a wider front end on it (again probably in the winter) and put a 16 inch rim/fatter tire on it... anyone know the neck size on an 86? Would a dyna wide glide triple tree bolt up, or is a kit needed?

I know I'm getting a bit ahead since I havent picked up the bike yet... but I've been planning this bike out for years in my head:clap:tour:clap

Velcome from Illiana. Congrats on the bike.

There are a lot of knowledgeable people here who can help with the conversions...I'm just not one of them.

Welcome to the forum. My wife has an 86 883. It has been a good bike for her. I think she paid $3500.00 for hers. You got a good deal. After you get the bike get yourself the service manual, that will help a lot. I've done quite a bit of work on hers, but nothing with the engine yet. There are alot of members here who can explain the 1200 upgrade.

Welcome from California. Try NRHS for the upgrade kit, link below. You shouldn't need to balance the lowere end. www.nrhsperformance.com
