If I recall correctly they had to cool one side down with fire hoses to get the last piece to fit because the sun had made one leg expand more than the other. My father was based in Enid OK in the early 60's and would watch the progress when he traveled home to PA on US 40.

I got to sit in one when I was in the Navy. Cool stuff! Inspired me to build a model of it with intricate detail. When I transferred to my ship I gave it to the base commander and he put it in the display case in the main office.

Man I wish I still had all my photo's from that time in my life...

Im sure you guys can. Go to Italy if you get the chance there is some impressive highways there. The Brenner pass Austria to Italy is one, also the E80/A10 La Spezia to Nice is another. The engineering is mind boggling. Used to call it 'tunnel bridge day' when I was driving backpacking tours over there. Shades on, shades off, shades on... Much better than the goat tracks we have in NZ!
