The B-29
Who is she?
What's her story?

That is Doc, now the second airworthy B29. She (he?) was rolled out today (http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbirds-news/boeing-b-29-superfortress-doc-welcomed-wichita.html)

The B-29 on display, Bockscar, dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, three days after the atomic attack against Hiroshima. Bockscar was one of 15 specially modified "Silverplate" B-29s assigned to the 509th Composite Group. Most B-29s carried eight .50-cal. machine guns in remote controlled turrets, two .50-cal. machine guns and one 20mm cannon in a tail turret, and up to 20,000 pounds of bombs. Silverplate B-29s, however, retained only the tail turret and had their armor removed to save weight so that the heavy atomic bombs of the time could be carried over a longer distance. Maj. Charles W. Sweeney was the pilot on that mission. He was also along on the first mission. He was the only man to have served on both Atomic Attacks.

Built to stay tough!

I've always admired those American warbirds builders for having built those bullet proof planes...

Remembering this story about a DC-3 taking off from Burma to Hong-Kong with a DC-2 wing bolted on one side, just amazing.

Or that other story of those P-47 going back to England with a few pistons and cylinders missing after hitting trees during the Ardennes battle or after being hit by the FLAK...

Not without a parachute, no sir! He says there's no fast way down in the event of a storm. Well, yes, there is, and its like jumping motorcycles; the landing is the tricky part. I'm kind of a practical individual. If I did climb all the way to the top of that structure, I would certainly expect the engineers would have had enough foresight to fit ALL of my size 13 boots on the platform. I can't understand that. It's like they're saying "OK, you made it to the top, but we've got one more challenge for you. If you can complete your work while standing on a ledge at 1700 feet, we'll let you take the ladder back down. If not..."

The prisoner defiantly stares down Heinrich Himmler, Hitler’s right-hand-man, who was responsible for the Holocaust. Greasley’s confrontation with Himmler took place during an inspection of the camp he was confined to. The inmates were ordered to remain seated, but Greasley refused. Horace Greasley also escaped the death camp, but sneaked back in to rescue a German woman whom he had fallen in love with. this is amazing
Wait it gets better, he escaped from the camp 200 times to meet with the woman he was in love with and returned after every time because there was no other place to go to.

Such stories are amazing to me. Often small acts of defiance or bravery that speak volumes of the individual, and there are so many of them being lost to history daily with the rapid passing of the greatest generation. The stories having a new found importance since I just discovered in the past year that my 91 year-old Dad was a member of the CIC (Counter Intelligence Corps) in Europe during WW-II. I'm in a race against time to finally get him to (reluctantly) tell me about it while there's still time.

Heros are those ordinatry men and women who do extraordinary things. Reminiscent of a Theodore Roosevelt quote; "I care not for what others think of what I do, but I care greatly about what I think of what I do."

I've never heard of him, so I looked him up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace_Greasley
QUOTE
The February 2010 Telegraph obituary[1] published a photograph[4][7] captioned "Greasley confronting Heinrich Himmler (wearing the spectacles) in the PoW camp".[8] The photograph and its description was republished by other news sources.[9][10] Guy Walters asserted categorically that the soldier in the picture was not Greasley, stating that the picture is held by the US National Archives and the caption details show it was taken in Minsk (in Belarus) in mid-1941, that it was taken by a photographer for a propaganda film and identifies the soldier as Soviet from his cap, and that the officers in the picture are the same officers who appear in the film with Himmler.[7]

Drowned 2 other crews before they did that.

"The secret of a submarine is not that it can disappear under the water. That's pretty easy-all boats can do that. The hard part is getting it to come back up again."

Cut'n'paste: If you read the plaque next to the Ictineo II, the Spanish script will tell you that the submarine was originally constructed in 1862 from the plans of Narcis Monturiol I Estarriol (1819 -1886), and that the original Ictineo II actually navigated the waters in the Port of Barcelona. What the bronze plaque fails to mention is that the Ictineo II was the first vehicle of its time to submerge and navigate below the surface of the sea, the first “real” submarine.

Technically that makes it a submersible as submarine is generally regarded as a offensive weapon.

I agree ...

Problem is costs are so high to maintain a ship in the water since most museums don't have the funds to put ships in drydock every 20 years or so.

Olympia where I volunteer has not been out of the water for 70 years or so (I believe)

I actually agree, ships should be on water, aircraft should be able to fly ...

The sub Becuna has zincs on her but several are completely gone now and a few are about 25% gone. Both have had their props removed. They also are in a river rather than salt water which has helped preserve them. However, the port bow of Olympia faces the channel to the marina and takes the brunt of the weather to the point they had to place a patch over the hull because it was leaking. There is another spot on the starboard quarter that has a patch.

There is a recommended period of time to dry dock a ship and that must be agreed to before the US Navy will release a ship to a museum. Don't recall what it is but believe it is 20 years or so.

The Texas which is a WWI battleship is in really bad shape. She sits in brackish water and was dry docked in 1988 and they many hull plates. She now needs it badly again.

It still amazes me that riveted steel or in some cases iron plates, didn't leak like a sieve when a ship was underway.
