These pictures were taken by a KTBS helicopter flying over Lake Wiess about 90 miles north of Birmingham, Alabama.
The helicopter pilot and the game warden were in radio communication. Here is a transcript of their conversation.
'Air1, have you a visual on the gator? Over' 'Approaching inlet now. Over'
'Roger Air1' 'Gator sighted..... Looks like it has a small animal in its mouth.. moving in. Over' 'Roger Air1' 'Holy Crap it's a deer!' 'confirm Air1.. did you say deer? Over' 'Roger! A deer in its mouth.. looks like a full sized buck. That's a big 'gator!
You're gonna need more men. Over' 'Roger Air1. Can you give me an idea on the size of animal? Over' 'Its big! 25 feet at least! Please advise - gator is heading to inlet.. do I pursue? Over' That has to be a HUGE 'gator - to have that deer in its mouth!
The deer was later found to be a mature stag - and it measured 11 feet!
This area is between Centre and Leesburg, Alabama, near the Rogers' home.
Game wardens were forced to shoot the alligator. Guess he wouldn't cooperate.
Anita and Charlie Rogers could hear the 'gator bellowing at night. Their
neighbors had been telling them that they had seen a mammoth alligator in the waterway that runs behind their houses.
'I didn't believe it,' Charles Rogers said, but he now realizes that the stories
were, if anything, understated.
Alabama Parks and Wildlife game wardens had to shoot the beast. Joe Goff, 6'1" tall, a game warden, walks past the 28-foot, 1-inch alligator he shot and killed that day in the Rogers' back yard.

Seems pretty big to me, in comparison to our native English alligators, but it doesn't seem like 28 ft next to the alleged 6 ft warden. :D
Internet myth here (http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/wcgator.asp). It's actually 13' 1", and was shot in West Columbia, Texas in April 2005.
That's right, Florida alligators s4!t alligators that big! :smoke
From Wikipedia:
An average adult American alligator's weight and length is 800 pounds (360 kg) and 13 feet (4.0 m) long, but can grow to 14.5 feet (4.4 m) long and weigh 1,032 pounds (468 kg). According to the Everglades National Park website, the largest alligator ever recorded in Florida was 17 feet 5 inches (5.3 m), although according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission web site the Florida state record for length is a 14 feet 5/8 inches (4.28 m) male from Lake Monroe in Seminole County.

If this is true, then the warden is about 4 1/2 feet tall and that's the smallest backhoe I've ever seen... :wonderlan
Plus the SNOPES site states;
"This image is another example of how positioning can exaggerate the apparent size of objects in photographs. The alligator is in the foreground of the picture, with its head turned towards the camera, while a game warden strolls in the background, making the reptile (particularly its head) seem proportionally larger than it really is."
The warden isn't too far in the background as you can CLEARLY see that his foot and shadow of it is visible below the tail of the gator and the tail is just inches from the ground!!!
It may not be 28' long, but it sure isn't a pissy 13' as SNOPES states...
Who died and left SNOPES in charge of disproving 'internet myths' anyway!!!

No disrespect intended Mr. WilliamV 1203, but since I am a native Georgian, I can not let an Alabama gator (or any gator from Florida for that matter) become famous! We are truly proud of the hunting skills of our reptilian residents!

No disrespect intended Mr. WilliamV 1203, but since I am a native Georgian, I can not let an Alabama gator (or any gator from Florida for that matter) become famous! We are truly proud of the hunting skills of our reptilian residents!
None taken RRK; I am just going to start leaving the words off the pics... :wonderlan
I lived in Ga many years ago. A little town called Hinesville. Made lots of good friends there. Lost a good one too... shot down in a 1 on 1 robbery... for $40 or so bucks. He handed over the $ but got shot anyway... Only 46 years old...
Kind of like the Hank Williams Jr song that says "for 43 dollars, my friend lost his life"...
