An old alfa or aston martin?

Folkie
17th December 2011, 01:08
I'm thinking, maybe Allard? That badge looks a bit like the Aston badge, but I don't think it is. Those double rear wheels are ringing bells with me: I should know what that is. :doh

Has something of the look of Frazer Nash as well, but I don't really think it's that either.

I'm sure I've seen that, or one very like it, racing at Goodwood.

Folkie
17th December 2011, 01:28
Or maybe not; the double rear wheels are not uncommon in speed hill climbs, apparently:

Sounds like the two summers when I used to get a shore house in Sea Isle City NJ and we were buying beers 4 at a time and placing our re-order when we got down to 2. Needless to say, the next morning was sometimes rather interesting in so many ways.

Never much cared for the Springfield Inn.

Or the night when the local said the Adnams bitter is so much better in the Railway Inn in Aldebourgh than the pub we were in. Seems they pour more beer there so the pipes are clearer! I seem to remember the dog between us two yanks in the back of the 2CV on the way there. I think he stayed on the floor though.
Yeah, dogs and beer. There always seems to be a story.

hole in the wall bar in the town where I went to college. Owned by a little old lady. Her dog Hugo sat on a bar stool and drank beer. Rumor has it that she had him stuffed after he died and plopped him back on his stool. Haven't been there in 20 yrs, but I could see her doing it.

In that case, you should consider heading up to Reading on June 1-3 for the Mid Atlantic Air Museum's WWII weekend. We have a great lineup of aircraft this year (click here (http://www.maam.org/wwii/ww2_acft.htm)). One B17 and several B25s, P51s, etc. are confirmed. Unconfirmed is another B17, B24, B25, B29, and a Lancaster.

And of course you can see the progress of the museum's Black Widow (http://www.maam.org/p61/p61_rest.htm) anytime!

It was really was a cool plane but mostly unheard of since there were only about 700 made and it was considered secret. An old neighbor of mine who served in the Pacific during WWII said one landed at the island where he was based and they would not let anyone near it.

There are only 4 left that are known. One at the Smithsonian, one at the USAF museum in Dayton, one in China, and one at the museum where I volunteer which is being restored to flying condition.

Cool. Now that you mention it, I believe my father got a super charger for his TD.

From what I understand, because of the way they were imported you can paint them any color or add quite a few options and they are still considered "stock".

His B was actually bought new by Don Garlits and he has some documentation to show it. The car is completely original except for the carbs, but he has the original ones.

It's obvious the Porsch hit the pole. What year is it?

Lots of questions raised, chick with the high heels was the passenger?
guy in the santa suit was the driver? What did he say to the cop?

It happened in NYC, Christmas Day 2008.
This video doesnt have many answers but thats all I know.
Bad Santa - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gj7glVumgXA)

The taxi has a nice lil dent in the front right cornerin the video.. the santa is staring at the driver door in the still shot. There is no kitty litter in the video, but there is in the pic.. so, I;m guessing the red sled was coming through the intersection going straight and the taxi was making a left turn from the left side of the sled. Side swiped the sled pushing it into the poles. One of them ran a red light. bummer.

Good detective work there. Here's a link (http://jalopnik.com/5871857/im-the-santa-who-crashed-my-vintage-porsche-on-christmas-in-new-york-city) to the whole story as told by Santa.

I like it. What you are hearing is the gear drive. Similar to the noise a blower makes on a car.:geek

I bet in person it sounds awesome, especially if you were standing on the other side of the bike where the exhaust exit is. Those little microphones on a vid camera pick up higher frequency sounds better than the lower DB that exhaust it putting out too. If you listen carefully right at the end of the vid (when it's in the trailer), you can kinda hear what it really sounds like when he gives it one last rap on the throttle.

Parrothead.....I would guess that your Great Grandfather's bike was a Harley. I'm no expert but if you look at the picture that Stairman posted there are several similarities between the bikes in his picture and the one that your forebearer sat upon. The front of the gas tank has the same angular shape and the broad stripes that runs around the perimeter of the tanks are identical. The shape of the cylinders and heads looks the same. Whatever that large cylindrical tank is in the front looks the same but the where it is mounted is different. They may be more clues but those are just a few of the obvious ones. Maybe someone who has a little more knowledge of these old bikes will jump in here.......

Thanks! I am hoping to track down the original photo and will scan it and see if any of the details are clearer. I know my father has it since the large blow up he has wasn't done that long ago, its just a matter of asking him when we are not in the middle of doing something.

Look carefully at the B-17 and note how shot up it is - one engine dead, tail, horizontal stabilizer and nose shot up. It was ready to fall out of the sky. Then realize that there is a German ME-109 fighter flying next to it. Now read the story below. I think you'll be surprised.
http://www.secondworldwar.org.uk/aircraft/b17yeoldpub.jpg

Charles Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton, England. His B-17 was called 'Ye Old Pub' and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy territory instead of heading home to Kimbolton.

After flying over an enemy airfield, a German pilot named Franz Steigler was ordered to take off and shoot down the B-17. When he got near the B-17, he could not believe his eyes. In his words, he 'had never seen a plane in such a bad state'. The tail and rear section was severely damaged, and the tail gunner wounded. The top gunner was all over the top of the fuselage! The nose was smashed and there were holes everywhere.

Despite having ammunition, Franz flew to the side of the B-17 and looked at Charlie Brown, the pilot. Brown was scared and struggling to control his damaged and blood-stained plane.

Aware that they had no idea where they were going, Franz waved at Charles to turn 180 degrees. Franz escorted and guided the stricken plane to, and slightly over, the North Sea towards England. He then saluted Charles Brown and turned away, back to Europe!

When Franz landed he told the CO that the plane had been shot down over the sea, and never told the truth to anybody. Charles Brown and the remains of his crew told all at their briefing, but were ordered never to talk about it.

More than 40 years later, Charles Brown wanted to find the Luftwaffe pilot who saved the crew. After years of research, Franz was found. He had never talked about the incident, not even at post-war reunions.

They met in the USA at a 379th Bomber Group reunion, together with 25 people who are alive now - all because Franz never fired his guns that day.

Research shows that Charles Brown lived in Seattle and Franz Steigler had moved to Vancouver, B.C. Canada after the war. When they finally met, they discovered they had lived less than 200 miles apart for the past 50 years!

Thanks for the rep, fellas. Working on a WWII aircraft carrier museum, I admire the bravery and honor these men had and am proud to now work beside them. To hear stories like these is an honor...

About a year ago, I met a small group of Tuskegee Airmen who were visiting our carrier to speak to several group of young inner-city high-schoolers. I must say, my neck hairs were at attention the whole time. What a fine group of ordinary men who performed extraordinary tasks; all while enduring racism and rejection.
http://www.tuskegee.edu/Uploads/images/About%20Us/Airmen/airmen8.jpg

Just how extraordinary were these pilots:

15,533 combat sorties, 1578 missions
112 German aircraft destroyed in the air, another 150 on the ground
950 railcars & vehicles destroyed
One destroyer sunk

Three Distinguished Unit Citations

99th Pursuit Squadron: 30 May–11 June 1943 for the capture of Pantelleria, Italy
99th Fighter Squadron: 12–14 May 1944: for successful air strikes against Monte Cassino, Italy
332d Fighter Group: 24 March 1945: for the longest bomber escort mission of World War II

At least one Silver Star
Well over one 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses
744 Air Medals
8 Purple Hearts

As a Group, they all received the Congressional Gold Medal (http://www.tuskegee.edu/sites/www/Uploads/files/About%20US/Airmen/TuskegeeAirmenCGMCeremony.pdf), 60 years later by then President Bush.

And to top it all off, they've made a movie about them! Good for them!!

Not to nitpick, but to be accurate, because these were truly great men even without the awards.

They received The Congressional Gold Medal.

The Medal of Honor is different and never has the word Congressional as part of it. Congress will tell you different I guess... :p

There are now 2 movies about them.
The Tuskegee Airmen 1995 and now Red Tales 2012

Camaro to the left?

Look at the dashboard... it sweeps back in the middle for the TV monitors to face the driver..."this looks like Darth Vader's bathroom"...

The yellow looks like the roofline from a Mazda Rotary Wagon. The convertible in front of KITT is hard to tell what it is... Perhaps a Ferrari Daytona?

Its a B-25. A B-17 is a tail dragger, so the wing would not be level sitting on the ground. Also, the "bumps" on the cowl around the engine are the exhaust ports. The B-17 does not have those.

http://www.reocities.com/snjdrvr/b17park.jpg

Also, the way the wing between the engine and fuselage slopes down is more of a B-25 thing

A B-24 sits much lower to the ground and the landing gear is a little more outboard
