First day in drydock, the screws of the USS Intrepid see daylight for the fist time since WW2 action. They were removed by the USN to preserve them and display them in museums, one of them will be in display at the Intrepid Museum when it reopens on Nov 8th.

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0808/catseye_chandra.jpg

Haunting patterns within planetary nebula NGC 6543 readily suggest its popular moniker -- the Cat's Eye nebula. Starting in 1995, stunning false-color optical images from the Hubble Space Telescope detailed the swirls of this glowing nebula, known to be the gaseous shroud expelled from a dying sun-like star about 3,000 light-years from Earth. This composite picture combines the latest Hubble optical image of the Cat's Eye with new x-ray data from the orbiting Chandra Observatory and reveals surprisingly intense x-ray emission indicating the presence of extremely hot gas. X-ray emission is shown as blue-purple hues superimposed on the nebula's center. The nebula's central star itself is clearly immersed in the multimillion degree, x-ray emitting gas. Other pockets of x-ray hot gas seem to be bordered by cooler gas emitting strongly at optical wavelengths, a clear indication that expanding hot gas is sculpting the visible Cat's Eye filaments and structures. Gazing into the Cat's Eye, astronomers see the fate of our sun, destined to enter its own planetary nebula phase of evolution ... in about 5 billion years.

Nope! But he made a few turns, and climbs and descents. He didn't stop smiling for at least an hour which is what makes taking people up for their first flight worthwhile.

When I posted the pic, I wondered how long it would take for someone to say something.

Chrysler did own Lamborghini for 7 years. 1987-1994.

Here's something that looks like a Dodge Intrepid but 6 years before, the Portofino.

Where'd the green dot come from :wonderlan

Ah! Your retina only has three colour cells, red, blue and green (the primary colours of light) - just like the dots on a TV screen when you get up close to it. You can make any colour you like from different ammounts of these three colours. The same ammount of all three makes white.

If you mix equal ammouts of red and blue light, then you get magenta.

http://webvision.med.utah.edu/gifswv/KallColor3.GIF

You'll notice that magenta and green make white so the illusion plays on that by, I think, either tricking the green cells to fire or by saturating the red and blue cells (which make magenta) so leaving green behind.

Try this....find an object, say the size of a CD, that is a single, very definite red colour. Stare at it for 30 seconds and then look at a white wall or bigger sheet of paper. You'll have saturated the red colour cells on your retina, so they'll stop working for a short while and you'll see a cyan shape of the object. That's the colour left over when you take red away from white, only the blue and green cells respond to the white light from the paper and you see cyan.

Look at a yellow object, you'll see a blue shape on the paper. (Yellow and blue make white)...that's why the sun's yellow and the sky's blue. The atmosphere scatters the blue wavelength light in all directions, leaving the sun's white light looking yellow.

Here endeth the lesson!:p

As much I liked Dennis, his number shouldn't be retired in Montreal.
He was with the Habs only 3 seasons. But he did get his Cup.

His jersey his retired where it was supposed to be, Chicago.

nice is that a hellcat

It's a Grumman/Eastern TBM-3E Avenger Torpedo Dive Bomber, built in 1942 and complete; it's all there, as it came from the assembly line, unrestored since retired. Massive and powerful is an understatement, yet light... it took three of us (ship employees) to push it around in the hanger deck (after hours). I took this photo after moving it around in the USS Intrepid Museum.

A TBM is huge for single engine aircraft. Sitting in the cockpit you are the same height as a B25. I was lucky enough to get a ride in one a few years ago. It was great. Only thing better was being in the nose of a B25.

Here is the one I rode in:

I LOVE this shot... the photographer set-up the camera on a very powerful telescope,
he set the automatic tracker on the sun, placed a solar filter on the lens, and waited for
the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle to pass by before taking his 1/8000th sec. exposure.

Totally awesome!

Sorry about the size, but it's needed to appreciate its details...

http://www.sbig.com/award/legault/iss_shuttle.jpg

The ISS and Shuttle were orbiting aproximately 350 miles over Earth when this picture was taken.
The Sun is aproximately 92.75 million miles away, but you get the picture....
Originally this photo was taken in B/W, but the photograher used a yellow fill
when the photo was developed.

The ISS and Shuttle were orbiting aproximately 350 miles over Earth when this picture was taken.

While visiting Western Puerto Rico, I was saddened not to see any Harley police bikes. Pretty much all police bikes were Kawasaki's, Hondas and Yamahas. But once I entered the Metropolitan Area, I was ecstatic to see a real Harley Police Bike.... It's a Sportster!!! Anyone recognize what it is?

It's a 2006 XL883 Standard, with optional saddlebags, crash bar forward controls and detachable windshield. Everything else was actually "custom" fitted for police use. Either way, it's a Sporty!

That's funny. Know what's funnier? Your police chief tells you you're getting a Harley Police cruiser, only to find out you're getting a girlie police bike...:redmad
