Any thoughts..........

I purchased this cup and bearing set
Custom chrome part number 160032, chrome frame cup kit XL 78 - 81 sportsters.

In the first picture you can see how far the bearing sits in the race in the cup, problem being I can't get any pre-load on the bearing because the top triple tree hits the cup before it can pre-load the bearing.

In the second picture you can see my old bearing and cup....top of the bearing is higher than the top of the cup, so you can adjust the pre-load.

Any ideas as to what I should do next?
Sent a e-mail to the company I bought them from....waiting to hear back. I couldn't find any e-mail address at the Custom Chrome website to ask them. (anybody know it)

Thanks

I think your missing the race. HD 48315-60 .....#31 in pic below # 30 comes with your set but not 31 both are used I beleve.

Any auto parts store should be able to take you old bearing #'s and cross them to your new set to see, if there a match.

You may have the wrong bearing. HD part # 45586-78 and race # 48315-60 and cup #48310-78

Thanks for the reply,
It is actually a Custom Chrome item which is the cups and bearing set for 78-81 sportsters, and the race is in the cups already.....

I'd still check the #'s somwhere. Any place that sells bearings. The old and new are diferent right?

the old bearing inner part that sticks up is a little taller than the new bearing, but if I put the old bearing into the new cup it still sits too low (below the top edge of the cup)

I used to sell car parts. And our bearing books had crossover part #'s

I'm guessing you got that set for the crome outer cup. I'd measure the inside highth of that cup, if it's the same as your old one. You could use it.

But I'd say you have the wrong bearings. So maybe you want to send the set back and get Timkin bearings. And take your old bearings with ya. So they can check the #s for ya.
