I have a 60's ironhead, but it has a 70's front end. How can I tell what year it is from, so I can get the proper parts, risers, etc.? Thanks for all and any help. -vetterdog

The VIN number should be on the left side of the engine case. If it's 62-69 the first two numbers are the year, if it's 70's the last two digits are a year code. Check out this site (http://www.cyborgcycles.com/vinid.htm).

i don't know for sure but maybee try measuring the width between the riser bots and then compare if you can find specs for the years in question. some companies will tell you in their description how far apart the risers are from each other. or maybee if it a stock front end from the 70's try emailing Harley and see if they can give you some things to look for or maybee tell you some specs for the front end which may help you figure out what year it's from. sorry for not being to helpfull buit i figured i would put out an idea to try to help.

Ok What style of brakes do you have on it? there is the style from like 74-75 to like 83 then 83 on to 99. It is a 35MM front end, most parts still should work. If possible do you have a pic showing the front brake?

'70-'72 are drum brake '73 was the first year for a disk brake up front and had the big banana caliper.'74-'77 had the triangular shaped caliper usually painted wrinkle black and '78-'79 had the smaller caliper like the newer bikes with a brushed aluminium finish and the '78 in my book shows dual disks up front.Hope this helps,if your still not sure PM me and I'll scan some pics from the service manual.
