As I've posted before, I live in Wendover NV-UT next to the Bonneville Salt Flats. We are less than one month away from the first of the Land Speed Record racing events for 2010. Speedweek will be starting August 14th.

Once the event is close we start to see more and more racers show up in town with their tricked out cars and bikes.

Last night after work I decided to ride the 10 miles or so out to the flats to see what the salt was looking like. Sometime there is water covering the salt even in July. I got there just as the sun was setting behind the mountains to the west.

This is where the asphalt ends and the salt begins. Out on the salt you can see a couple sitting on a blanket watching the sunset, and further back is a Bride and Groom having a photo taken.

Here's a close up of the bride/groom. You can see the salt is quite rough in its natural state. Before the LSR races the course is smoothed and groomed.

Looking back the other direction to see the sun go behind the mountains. It looks like snow and ice but it was pushing 100°.

I'll add more pics to this thread as the summer and the events continue.

You got close, did you take a run? Just kidding, the salt is not smooth enough. Sure would be fun to try it. I wonder what the top speed on an 883 at Bonneville is?

Think the 600 push rod gas record is about 139

Since it is currently hard and dry you could ride (maybe not run) on it. A lot of riders that pass through town ride at least a little way out onto the salt, just to say they have ridden on Bonneville. But that few minute ride is going to cost you a bike wash.

I wonder what the top speed on an 883 at Bonneville is?

Streamlined or Non-Streamlined?

Well, the first big LSR event of the year is less than a week away. SCTA's Speed Week starts Saturday. A constant topic of conversation this time of year is the salt conditions. Wet weather can hinder and/or prevent whole days of racing. And this area has been seeing daily thundershowers for the last several days.

I took the camera and headed out today to check out the salt. Here are the pics.

This is one of the sights each person sees on the way to the salt flats. Going over I-80 heading north.

On the other side is a gas station and the Salt Flats Cafe. It's always busy.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39065110.jpg

A few early birds are already camping at the bend.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39065112.jpg

The BLM has a soft mud sign up.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39065115.jpg

There's standing water on the sides of the road going out.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39065129.jpg

But at the end of the road the salt was quite dry.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39065118.jpg

There were a few vehicles parked at the end of the asphalt.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39065127.jpg

And it's hard to see in this resized photo but there are several large trucks out on the salt preparing the track and pit areas.

Speedweek ended today. Guess I better put up some pics before BUB in a week.

Here's some pics from the Nugget parking lot which turns into a car show every night of Speed Week.

I don't know what happened to the first 3, the camera must have been on a wrong setting.

If my information is correct, this is the trophy where the SCTA records the name of the fastest entry at Speed Week.

Is far as I know, the Speed Demon was the fastest this year doing about 406 mph. I could be wrong.

Tomorrow is the offical start of the 7th BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials. Today was the day for the riders to register and get through tech and safety inspection.

I was out there early working for the food vendor so I got a few pics in the early hours. I had to leave around noon to go to my other job so I'll have to get more later.

Here's the sun coming up.

This is the BUB staff/officials meeting before the riders are allowed on the salt.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39973010.jpg

Just after 9AM the racers were allowed to enter the salt and head for the pits. Here's the team vehicles stretching from the pit area back to "lands end".

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39973013.jpg

The riders lined up to register with the track officials.

Let's get to the bikes...

Like I said I didn't have a lot of time to look through the pits as I was working but I did sneak a few pics.

This is a flathead bike owned by a guy named Fritz from Washington State. If I remember correctly he's hoping to do over 140mph. He also said he sometimes runs an ironhead engine on the same bike and it does over 180mph.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39973027.jpg

I noticed so many Buell bikes here you'd swear they were still in business. Here's the Buell Brothers pit area.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39973037.jpg

One of the Buell Brothers bikes wasn't a Buell at all.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39973042.jpg

I didn't get a chance to check this one out.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39973047.jpg

Not a race bike, someone's BT ride.

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/medium/39973050.jpg

I'll get some more pics this week. Can you believe the weather forecast is 68° for a high tomorrow?
