Break Pads, Changing Fluids & System Bleeding

Posted 19th June 2010 at 14:59 by Big Al-1200c (Big Al)
Updated 28th June 2010 at 08:04 by Big Al-1200c

On my last post, I mentioned that the breaks needed attention. Here is the scoop:

Ever since I got this bike, I noticed that the breaks needed to be looked over, as both the lever and pedal felt spongy and needed quite a lot of effort to get the bike to stop. When I inspected the front break pads I discovered that exterior pad was unevenly worn, way more on one end than the other. This meant that the pistons were not applying the same amount of force. A clear sign that there...

Air Cleaner Install, Baffles & CV Carburetor tunning

Posted 19th June 2010 at 14:58 by Big Al-1200c (Big Al)
Updated 28th June 2010 at 08:09 by Big Al-1200c

About a week ago, I took apart the Carburetor to do some re-jeting and install a new air cleaner (AC). When I took the AC and CARB apart, I found that the Stock AC assembly had been replaced with a K& N AC Heavy Breather Kit. Also, once I removed the float bowl, I found that the stock Emulsion Tube (Needle Jet Holder) had been replaced by some after-market tube that not only looked different but it didn't fit stock Keihin Jets, instead it uses its own jets. Installed it had a #170 Main...

Paying the Harley Tax...

Posted 19th June 2010 at 14:51 by Big Al-1200c (Big Al)

Current status of the bike:

The bike is mostly all stock. The only modifications I have found are the Mini-Apes handlebars and the aftermarket exhaust.

On the exhaust, it is actually a good system, and I plan on leaving it on, but it needs fixing. It is the Vance & Hines Staggered Straightshots , they are a very recommended exhaust system for the 1200 sporty, but the problem is that the previous owner removed the baffles and I don't have them. Not only is the...

Lifestyle: Blast From The Past!

Posted 19th June 2010 at 14:50 by Big Al-1200c (Big Al)

Ok, so there I am, chatting with Pell at his shop (P & D Service of Louisville, Ky), when suddenly he grabs what seemed like a random back-issue of American Iron Magazine, opens it up to the back page and shows me the "Harley Memories" section, featuring the picture below of Morris Hockersmith and his 1938 80" Flathead.

I though the picture was great...

LIFESTYLE: My First Bike Ride and the Man behind it.

Posted 19th June 2010 at 14:48 by Big Al-1200c (Big Al)

When I was about 3, my uncle Tito was about to leave for work on his bike when some adult decided it was a good idea to put me on his lap and let him take me on a ride to the end of the street and back. I have no recollection of the experience but I have seen the pictures and heard the stories.
Tito was riding before I was born, a daily rider to work and back when I was a child. I will never forget the day my grandma told me that uncle Tito had suffered a terrible bike accident and...
