I was going to let this one slide originally. I'm sure you Yanks are sick of it already, and you've only got almost an entire year left of it. However, one of our forum members, Sly, dropped this post spoofing the GOP debates (it might be moved to P&R by the time you read this - if so, I'll find it and re-link it), so I figured "why not?".

The clip was funny, but the sad thing is that I think it's actually a mild version of what they're really up to behind closed doors. Both the Republicans and the Democrats have been slinging so much mud, they'll have to start dredging the Atlantic soon in order to keep up with demand.

On the Democrat side, the big debate rages on between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Although both sides have started to (and only weakly) deny and decry it, they've both turned it into a war of brothers versus mothers. In a political arena long dominated by white men, both hold a minority card, and both are playing it like a pair of pocket Aces.

On the Republican side, the candidates aren't even speaking for themselves. They're doing the Geico thing, bringing in famous people to say it for them with a little more funk. Romney has action film star Chuck Norris in his corner, screaming that his lead GOP contender, John McCain, is too old (Norris is only 4 years younger). Well, to get even, McCain has brought on another action film star, Silvester Stallone (who's six years younger than Norris), and has said he'll "send Sly Stallone to take care of Chuck Norris". Since when did we let action stars tell us who to vote for? ...oh yeah. Jesse Ventura, 1998.

Just once, I'd like to have an election of civilized adults, rather than something resembling the "cross-dressing she-male Eskimo hookers" episode of The Jerry Springer Show. I know it won't happen. But really, wouldn't it be nice?

To quote Dennis Hopper in Speed, "in two hundred years we've gone from 'I regret but I have one life to give for my country' to 'f__k you!'?".

We now return you to your regularly scheduled life, already in progress.

Statement of interest: I'm not an American. I have no vested interest. I just think these election antics are getting silly, on both sides.
