Smelly cat, smelly cat...

So somehow a stray cat has found its way to my mother's front porch. She's been putting food and water out for him, and she put a little cat carrier box outside so he could have some shelter from the elements.

The cat is a gray tabby and is pretty fat, so I figured he had a home and his owners just let him out for awhile during the day.

Well this weekend the temperature has dropped to below zero with the wind chill. As I was trying to reassure myself that the cat is fine and is probably in a warm house somewhere, I went downstairs to smoke a cigarette. My basement was freezing. At that point, I realized that if it's that cold in my house, imagine how cold it is outside. So at 3am I decided I had to drive to my mom's house to check on the cat.

There he was in his little house, looking cold and miserable. At this point my heart about broke and I went inside to find a space heater. I plugged it in outside and pointed it towards his cat carrier. He's a wild cat, and I can't get near him or he'll run away. So as I put the heater on the porch he ran to the edge of the porch to watch me. I talked to him in a quiet voice to try and sound comforting. Then I went inside and found some hand warmers. The hand warmers are the kind that last for seven hours, you open the packet and once they're exposed to air they start to warm up. I put them in his house and went back home.

I'm hoping he finds his way back to his house so he can keep warm. He's very timid, so I had to leave or else he wouldn't go back to where the warmth is.

So now it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm still awake worrying about a cat.

Hey, you gave it a chance; that's all you can do. At least you didn't pull the same stunt that some schmuck in Dallas did (see article). Hopefully the cat will find its way back home soon enough.
