Missing this bolt at tappet base, help identify

So, I wanted to degrease my bike before wrenching on it any further. So I took it to the side of my house, let it soak in citric degreaser and hosed it down. Sprayed with more degreaser and started brushing some of the nooks and crannys. Well, thats when I noticed I am missing a bolt on the tappet base. Great, now I am pretty sure the lower end is full of water and degreaser!

First question is what do you call this bolt so I can order a new one. I see what is called "Lifter Block Screw Set" at JP. Can someone point me to correct part to replace?

Second question, by likely getting water and degreaser in there, do you think will be ok? If I just change oil do you think will be fine?

Thanks!

No need to special order that, it’s a 5/16-18 x1” bolt. Make a visit to your nearest hardware store. I do not recall if that is a blind hole or not, stick a nail in there and see if it bottoms out or not.

A drink straw is longer. May have other advantages too :)

Thats true, but all he has to give her is the first inch. Wink, wink!:D

If that hole goes all the way through you will need to take measures/precautions against ruining the bearings in the engine from water contamination.

That takes a 1" long 5/16 coarse thread bolt. Grade 5 is fine.
You might be able to use a slightly longer bolt with a washer, be careful of it bottoming out.

Apparently it can work without it but your '75 came with a clamp around the starter that was anchored with the bolt that you are missing.

See picture of clamp.

In all the years I have worked on Ironheads I have never seen that clamp in place!

Discontinued the last 2 years of production that used the Hitachi starter (79-80).

Good news, that is just a blind hole. Will stop at my local hardware store on the way home from work tomorrow to grab a bolt. Appreciate all the help!!
