It's easy to downshift and brake with your heels using properly set up highway pegs and keeping mids protects your spine from bumps because you can rise on the mid pegs to cushion shock.

I'm not getting any younger either and have already had a C3/4 fusion and L3/4 stenosis surgery. All it takes is one serious bump to the spine an ya can be in a world of hurt. Worse, if you lose back function that can end your riding and a lot more.
