Phosphorous is more damaging to cat converters. It is a part of the additive ZDDP, Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate.

When the American Petroleum Institute (API) SH and the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) established phosphorus limits at 0.10 percent weight in 1996,
motorists and enthusiasts wondered if it would negatively affect wear protection. The debate intensified in 2004 when the API SM and ILSAC further limited phosphorus to 0.08 percent, where it remains today.

Despite the reduction, there is no evidence to suggest modern engines using today’s lower-ZDDP oils are suffering widespread wear.
A properly formulated oil that meets API SN and ILSAC GF-5 is capable of delivering reliable wear protection in stock engines.


The API SN phosphorus limits of 0.08% only applies to these motor oil weights: 0W20, 0W30, 5W20, 5W30, 10W30 and the new 8, 12 and 16 viscosity oils.

So if you are using the recommended 20w-50 in your Harley, those oils MAY have higher levels of ZDDP.

Harleys with roller lifters do not have the same type of wear that a flat tappet engine would. That is one area many are concerned with in automotive/diesel engines with the lower ZDDP oils.
