the factory race dept officially attended only ama sanctioned events.
(remember the race dept was just a handful of guys. you aint talking joe gibbs racing here).

parts were produced by the via the production dept, and i believe it was production who assembled the over the counter r models.

so race had very little to do with drag racers or speed trials.

some hillclimbs were an ama sanctioned event but you didnt see the dept there. although they did back the dealers who supplied the the amateur racers with stuff that wasnt available over the counter.

afaik hd never asked or told any one to remove the company name from their privateer mounts even though the company line was use only our parts and dont modify your bike unless we give you instructions how to do so.

privateers using aftermarket were were the on cover of many bike rags at that time.

none of this was lost on hd bigwigs.
id didnt cost them anything to reap the name recognition.

so it was a no brainer for the company to supply unfinished (so the user could modify them) race parts to the privateer supply chain at an affordable price. and if asked they would hand you over the engineering drawings (blueprints) free. it was just better for the company to do so.( the Japanese were breathing down their necks so making the privateers reverse engineer was waste of valuable time that could be used to stay on top).

thinking the race dept was rolls royce is romantic, its just wasnt how it was.
