Thumbs up One off 883 tach install

After the sucessful 3.3 to 4.5 gallon tank swap, I saw the big empty space just aft of the handlebar clamp. I thought it would be a good place to mount my tach, here's how 4.5 hours of work turned out.

The story....

I got a pretty good deal on a 2 inch (compact, p/n 67564-05A) Harley tach and was having trouble finding a place for it. It was basically plug and play, I bought a mating connector from Batts and plugged it into the diagnostics port. Works like a charm.
I like the analog gauge, but it's a bit bulky after adding the chrome cup (p/n 74658-05), plus it's supposed to install in a specific mount that, of course, won't fit my bike without really moving things around. This is my solution....

The mount

.125 6061 T6, this is what took the lion's share of the time. Lots of mock ups, measuring and cussing. The rings around the holes are from numerous test fits.

The finished product

Here's how it came out. I'll probably get it anodized black or maybe paint it wrinkle black to match the speedo, for now it's just going to have to stay brushed, cause I wanna ride it tomorrow. I had to stack three washers under the mount so the cup was not on the stem bolt. I'm going to put some small chrome spacers in there tomorrow instead of the washers. It clears the tank just fine, the wires are a little close, I may put some tape on the tank to protect the finish.

Here's another shot with it lit up. All in all this came out better than I thought it would. Subtle and functional.

If anyone wants the dimensioned drawing, I can provide it in either a dxf or jpg file.

looks great i run the same tach on 1200c. i also connected through the data link connector. was the easiest and cleanest way i thought of. i think it's bullsh*t that h-d directions recommend splicing or using scotchlocks! just be careful if that data wire gets grounded out it will fry your ignition module!

Yeah, I couldn't believe that splicing crap either.
No possibility of a grounded data wire, I used a mating connector, plug and play

Good and neat work. I love it when folks do something a little different.

The center hole diameter is 2.250, not sure what you're asking about the cable. The tach comes with a wiring harness, three wires to hook up, signal, power and ground.

I was thinking there was a cable that had connectors on both side that you hooked up.But cut and splice is OK too.
Thanks .
