VOES RE- Install? Bad Knocking Experts Please HELP!
Greetings Fellow Forum Members,
I have bad pinging and knocking when my bike warms up or gets hot.
I understand that with 10.5 to 1 compression as it's running now it's partly a result of only being able to get 93 octane fuel. I am suspicious of the posted octane ratings anyway but never mind that now.
Please correct me here:
As I understand it, I should:
- Re-install the voes device to cure that.
- Advance or retard the ignition? How many degrees?
- Use higher octane fuel or add Octane booster to the fuel I buy.
First of all I wouldn't know a voes unit it one hit me in the eye driving down the highway. Second, I'm trying to get my head around how it's hooked up.
As I understand it - the unit is connected at one end to a vacume hose coming from the carb and the other end (wires) go to the ignition. The vacume activates a sensor which sends a signal to the ignition to advance or retard accordingly. ???????
My engine:
- 10.5 to 1 compression
- 1203 cc stock bore Buell cylinders / Pistons / rings
- Dyna 2000 programable nose cone ignition
- DC6-5 Single Fire Coils
- Mikuni 42mm carb.
What do I buy?
What is the part number?
Where do I get it?
How much does it cost?
How do I install it?

I'd start by simply retarding your timing say 2.5 degrees or so and see if that doesn't eliminate the pinging.

It's your ignition setup.
I doubt even the VOES curve will fix your problem.
(Hint :Programmable in the name)
Your welcome,

Ignition adjustments?
Thanks Dakin Engineering and Rico 05R for your replies here.
SO I take what your both saying to mean is that the problem is simply a matter of adjusting the curve in the ignitions.
As far as retarding the ignition 2.5 degrees?
Are there any dissadvantages or trade-offs for "retarding the ignition"?
Thanks again and your help is appreciated.
Best regards,

It's a given that with higher compression, you need less timing. Try retarding the timing a couple of degrees and see if it eliminates the pinging (detonation). If not, retard it another degree or so. Once you've eliminated the pinging, see if performance has suffered any. If it has, just add some timing back in until you reach a balance point.

Cheap fuel (E85) makes detonation MORE likely.
Get the best pure gasoline you can find and stay with it.
You have a three way interactive problem;
Too much advance
High compression
Lousy fuel

Jeeze, you guys think 93 is lousy fuel? We're stuck with 91! I'd LOVE to have 93!
These guys have it...advance, compression and fuel. Since adjusting compression is not easy, you are stuck with fuel or timing.

Hey Robotech, Rico 05 and Dakin Engineering,
I really appreciate you guys throwing in on this.
I am going to try to locate an experienced tuner in my neighborhood of Hollywood / Ft. Lauderdale Florida.
Can this be done with the Dynatek software computer appication and interface by an experienced tuner?
Or is this a job that needs to be done at a shop with a dyno?
Any more light you guys can shed on this for me is appreciated. If this were a Graphic or a website I'd have it flying like an alien space craft. I am by all accounts an AWESOME graphic web designer. BUT I'm better off not putting a tool in my hand to do anything bikewise because I will most likely have to pay the mechanic to fix my fix. So this advise and insight is truly appreciated.
Best regards,
Fiftysixer

Do you know which advance curve your Dyna ignition is set to?
Switches 2 and 3 on the module control which advance curve it's set to:
Curve 1 = 2 OFF / 3 OFF
Curve 2 = 2 ON / 3 OFF
Curve 3 = 2 OFF / 3 ON
Curve 4 = 2 ON / 3 ON
Curve 1 brings in the advance earliest. Curve 4 gives the slowest advance.
I'd guess you should be on curve 3 or 4 - most likely 4.
With a similar set-up, I'm on curve 4, with the ignition retarded on the backplate by a further 4 degrees, and I get no pinking at all.
Since you have no VOES, out of interest, what is switch 1 set to? ON or OFF?
