Default 2006 Shifter Shaft Replacment.

I need some suggestions! I just replaced a shifter shaft on my 2006 XL1200 and when I went to torque the nut (reverse thread) on the clutch I stripped the threads on the nut before reaching the 80 ft lbs that was required.
I plan to order a new nut and work upto say 70 ft lbs in increments and see if it will hold. I'll just stay on the low torque spec side. Does this sound like a plan? I brushed the threads on the mainshaft and they seem like the shaft threads are a lot harder than the nut threads. Yes I'll be using Red Locktite.
Any other suggestions?
