Well, you've both given me some good helpful info to think about and for that I thank you. Guess I've just gotta figure out now which cam between the .497 and .551 would best suit my needs as a streetable cam that will give me the bump I'm lookin' for. I'm still leaning toward the .497, just nervous about clearance.

Ha! The kicker is that I've got an almost brand new set of "E" cams straight out of an XB on my workbench, and would be smart enough to install 'em in the right order (backwards from the buell) but not smart enough to figure out how to properly time them with the timing marks being off between buell and xl. Damn it.

I'm happy with the seat of my pants dyno on the .497's in my build.

The N4's while "drop in in most cases have been know to give problems when combined with the pistons you have in mind AND the late model 1200 heads because of limited eyebrow clearance needed for the larger valves in the 1200 heads.

The se conversion dished piston is intended for use with the 883 head.

I know this does not address your specific combination, but it is food for thought if you ever decided to go with 1200 heads down the road. The 1200 heads combined with dished pistons, give the additional problem of lower than optimum compression.

No, I'm not planning on installing 1200 heads. I want to keep the 10:1 pistons and 883 heads that I've got now. I read through all 52 pages of threads in this sportster bottom end forum, and it seems like the best I can get is "yeah, they SHOULD bolt in with no problems, but maybe not. Most threads just die off and nobody posts updates (for the most part) after they have done the mods.

Well that is really how any of these upgrades go. if your changing something for a bolt in and not checking your clearances your just asking for problems. my se.497 cam #3 rubbed on the inner case when the stock cams didn't. Dan at NRHS said he had never heard of this happening. you could plainly see that the #3 pocket machined into inner case for cam clearance hadn't cleaned up as well as the others. i have worked in an Aerospace CNC machine shop making aerofoil fan blades for commercial and military jet engines for 15 years. believe me when i tell you tolerances can vary a lot from one machine to another or even from spindle to spindle on the same machine. many many things can effect this. human error loading the part, air temperature, poor cutters ect... so check every clearance wether it is bolt in or not. When you are talking measurements in the thousand of an inch it doesn't take much to be out of tolerance.

Yeah, I intend to check my clearances, and understand that just because shit fits well on one bike doesn't necessarily mean it will on another of the same kind. I'm basically just tryin' to see if people have been running the .497's on the rubbermounts generally without problems and fitment issues before I shell out a couple hundred bucks and spend an afternoon tearing into my motor cuz it's my daily ride.

I do appreciate everyone's input here thus far. I know there's an endless supply of bad information on the interweb. Seems this forum has more legitimate trustworthy info then elsewhere.

Same boat here can't find full finished threads. I want to put Andrews cams in a stock from factory 2007 xl1200 with stock 1200 heads. what mods required to install Andrews n4 cams and Andrews n6 cams. will either if these bolt in I'm concerned with piston to valve clearance. I currently have the stock piston and stock w cams. Did any body do this 04 and up and have issues with piston kissing valves or success?
