OK - Thanks for answering the questions - Clever wedge for the float bowl.

So, it idles fine, as well?

Test1 - Pull the vacuum hose off the VOES. Put a finger over the hose opening (or plug it with a bolt) - try starting the bike with the enrichener. (the VOES may be leaking air into the carb)

Test2 - To confirm more fuel is needed for starting, I would use a 45 idle jet & set the Idle Mixture Screw (IMS) to 2-1/2-turns out from a very light seat - then, while cranking the engine, spray a small amount of fuel into the carb to see if it will fire...

You may need a spray bottle (or spray can of starter fluid - very little) since raw fuel from the AccPump may not be atomized enough to fire the engine cold.
Does the Accelerator Pump spray fuel?

Sounds like the timing cover was never removed (do they look like the original rivets or replacement ones?).

Have you actually looked at the spark on the plugs while cranking (grounded to the fins)? Is it a strong, BLUE spark?

Have you changed the plugs? What plugs are you using?
Changed the plug wires? (Swapped the plug wires at the coil?)

Have you checked the ohms of the coil, both primary & secondary?
Checked the primary wire connections at the coil?

The Sportsterpedia describes a way to manually create sparks at the plugs:

Ok so we finally spent some time on the bike. For the record the coil, wires, and plugs are all new. We ohmed out both primary and secondary on coil. In spec. Wires good. Plugs good. Tested the voes with my mitty vac brake bleed pump. Tests good.

We finally made some headway but not out of the woods yet. We dug a little deeper in the manual and ended up testing the ignition module and the module harness.

Module was good @ . 6 ohms. We tested the harness and found pin 4 with the correct resistance but found resistance on pin 2&3 whe there should be none. The wires grabbed back to the coil. The primary circuit on the coil was grounded.

Long story short the pink wire coming off the coil should go up to the headlight bundle to a tach if applicable. Followed it up to the connector behind the headlight and it comes out the other side of the headlight connector to a factory 2 pin black connector the was grounded.

I assume the replacement harness we bought secondhand was not a 1991 as stated? Maybe the speedo unit which we also bought secondhand isn't the same year. Who knows. While wiring it up every connection was plug and play- no cobbled up splices anywhere. Weird

Anyhow we still need to drop the jet down from the 46 but it starts much easier and the enrichener actually works. Thank you for all the tips.

Thanks for updating the thread.
Good for you - Once again, this shows that being persistent will often pay off.

Good job tracking down an odd problem. I have no idea why anyone
would deliberately have the PINK Wire end in a short at that connector.

It's tough to get anything used and then have trouble with it. Since you have no history with the item to help point you in the right direction you have to work from scratch checking everything that MIGHT be wrong.

Now you're ready to go back to the Sportsterpedia for tuning the CV40 carb:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/techtalk:evo:carb02

Use the Idle Drop Method for getting the correct Idle Jet and the right Idle Mixture Screw (IMS) setting.

Since you have an 883 engine, you'll likely do best at 45 or maybe even the 42 jet - Choose the jet that puts your final IMS setting at about 2-1/2 turns out from a gentle seat of the needle. Remember that the Idle Jet also feeds the Transfer Ports so you want it to flow properly for that and then use the IMS to get the right flow for the Idle Port.
