My shifting on my stock '06 1200 is: (upshift) 1st - 2cd...18-20mph, 2cd - 3rd...35mph, 3rd - 4th...45mph, 4th - 5th...55+mph. If I shift too much sooner I get a lot of jerking or pinging in the higher gears. I downshift probably 5mph slower than my upshifts.

Yeah same here. I wind it out another 5-10mph, especially up top, but that's the minimum. Especially up top. I'll ping if I crack it in 5th @55 with my advanced timing map. I'll run it up to 65-70 in 4th when I'm givin' it. 80-85 in 5th and it feels like I kicked in the afterburners and it jumps to 95 in a flash.
It loves to run 85-90 or so. Smooth as can be to. Just that one spot low in the rpm range that feels like it's lugging. And maybe that's all it is but it's got to be lower than 2000 rpm.

The last two times my son and I went to Sturgis, I explained and demonstrated the 105mph pass. You get stuck behind some real sightseers and you really don't have that much room or time to pass. He had to give himself a lot more room for his 103 inch 6speed Superglide, but he really learned the value of downshifting and listening to the motor. After that he and I would do a lot of shifting practice thru the twisties of places like Spearfish Canyon, Boulder Canyon, etc. One of the things he learned was that you can run a whole canyon without ever touching your brakes; right gear, right speed and the motor always lets you know how happy it is.
As far as I know, my 1200 idles about 1100rpm.. when it's really hot it seems to idle somewhere around 1300-1400 rpm. I was gonna get a tach for it because sometimes I find myself looking for the second 5th gear but decided I'd just listen to the motor more. My wife probably wishes I'd do that for her.

I hear ya there. lol. She says I listen to the bike and the dog more than her.
I have no need or desire for a tach except I'd like to be more precise setting the idle speed.
