Default Metal chunks in oil

I have an 01 883 that I haven’t ridden in a while. Started it up and let it idle for a few minutes and then pulled the oil and primary plugs to change the fluid. I let it drain overnight and found a good bit of metal grit and shavings the next day. Since I didn’t know where it came from I cut open the filter and didn’t see anything, so I assumed it was the primary so I pulled the cover and the clutch and chain. Some small flakes on the magnets but no chunks.

I went to clean out the drain pan I had been using and I found what looks to be and intact needle from a bearing. I don’t know how it would have escaped without getting mangled but I went ahead and pulled the transmission. The needle bearings that stay in the case were intact,so I pulled off one gear on the countershaft to look at the split bearings. The one from the pan looks larger than the one on the shaft so I figured I would call it a night before going any further.

Does anyone know if the main shaft uses larger needle bearings? Could this be a pin from something I took apart already that fell in the pan? I took measurements and I’m going to try to post some pictures..never mind. I don’t know how. The needle measures .425” long with a diameter of .093”

Is it real fine metal like a metal flake in paint? If so I would tend to agree that it is from primary.

its Probably the consistency of coarse sand with slivers that look like what you get from drilling metal. There probably enough to cover an area the size of a quarter if you spread it out.

Are the crank and transmission the only place where needle bearings are used?
I’m probably going to pull the cam cover off tonight.

On the main and counter shafts the needle bearing are the same size.
But on the 5th gear assembly the needle bearings are larger.

Hopefully I found the problem. The shift detent was cocked due to the garbage retainer Harley uses. Looks like it’s been making contact on one of the lobes.
