Default How to time at 20 degrees BTC instead of 35??

So, I have a rigid 02 carbureted sportster I just finished. I do not have a VOES, yes I know "get one" right, not happening, anyway. I put an Ultima single fire knock off Dyna in her after seeing more and more stellar reviews. Everything was pretty straight forward and simple BUT then I was trying to dynamically time it and looked for the timing marks in the service manual and apparently all 2002 sporties except the sport only advance 20 degree BTC, however the ultima depending on the curve you select will advance to 35 degrees for a stock HD. What gives am I missing something? How can I time it at 20 when it advances to 35 degrees? I know I can turn the timing plate to bring it back to 20 degrees but that is going to retard the entire curve and not just the advance by 15 degrees. I did read that static timing it would be fine but I really am not sure of that statement. Any advice would be appreciated.

Maybe I should ask is the 35 degree advance too much what curve is everyone else running?

Do you have a 1200 or a 1200S?

It's a XL1200C, I was told it was stock when I bought it. The guy I bought it from had it sitting for about 5 years after he bought it and wasn't entirely sure about that though, he couldn't really recall, older gentlemen.

i have an 01 sport and the ambient makes a diff on what curve, in the summer, i run #4 which is the laziest, big issue with fuel. if you dial back the plate, it effects the whole curve and i had to do so on mine. the seasonal transition blends play heck on mine and the biggest issue is clutch off when first loading the engine, i avoid slipping the clutch if all possible, once rolling, no issue. during the winter, i can run a faster curve, i do not run voes as it dials in the adv too quickly so i adv via rpm. you will just have to play with it. yep the sport does use 20* but mine is around 28*, use a dial back timing light.

Glad to see the overwhelming advise on this one! Anyways, what I ended up doing was trying all 4 of the preloaded curves and it seemed to run the best with curve 3 but I did get spark knock at about 3000 RPMS. So, I bit the bullet and obtained the programming adapter and created a custom curve and set the max advance. I haven't put many miles on it as of right now but the good news is no spark knock!
