Checking the compression is a good idea......I would be willing to bet that if he checks compression cold, it will be in normal range. If he checks compression hot, it will have dropped significantly (because a valve is open). If that is the case........adjust pushrods with a cold engine and you will likely solve all your problems. If you have poor compression readings cold and hot, you have a valve problem or a ring problem. There is a sticky in the tech section to help determine which using a bleed down test.

I agree, but I guess if you don't have a baseline to check against, it would be futile. Maybe a good time to establish one if not already done.

There are lots of problems with the ignition and fuel system that can cause hard starting when the engine is hot. I would get a baseline on the compression and like bruley said, wait til the engine is stone cold, adjust the valves according to the manual and go from there.
