I got loud pipes on my truck, and all my bikes so I'm all for noise. Hell, I ran short shots for ages and didn't think they were even close to obnoxious. But do you know how loud 92db at IDLE really is? If it idles at 92 it would be revving near to or past 100db, and that my freinds if just friggin ridiculous.

Here is a bit of an update, the city purchased 8, DB measuring kits,at a cost of $17,00.00 a piece. That tells me ,they will be out in force and writing tickets...so they can pay for them puppy's.
Some guy was on the AM radio yesterday morning, saying he measured a city transit bus at 102 DB's when it was leaving the bus stop....are THEY going to get a ticket?? When pigs fly I say...This bylaw is ONLY for scoots!!

Hey there roadtrip...... back at ya .... a quote from your BC post...

"I think you should move to a non-socialist area or have enough $$ to hire a constitutional lawyer and take it to the supreme court."

Seriously though, you can count on some harassment aimed at the bike community and that sucks.

Roadtrip: you said that the test is from 1 meter...is that to the side, straight back or what? I've got a db meter and I'd like to see where mine would come in...just need to know where to set up the meter.

It's no wonder they are doin this shit. I was buyin my lunch at a little cafe with an outdoor, walk up order window when some dude on a "chopper" big twin came around the corner and nailed it. He musta been runnin street sweepers or somethin without baffles. Had 36" ape hangers clear over the top of his head. He was in a hurry to get home for lunch I guess, cause it was BLAAHHH,BLAAAAHHHH,BLAAAAHHHHH,BLLLLLAAHHH, all the way out of site. All of this in a 20mph residential neighborhood, 11:30 on a week day. The bad part was, even after all that noise he couldn't have been going more than 50. All I could think was "Here come a noise ordinance".

I am a project manager at a manufacturer of industrial and commercial air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and many of my projects go into buildings or areas where sound levels are a concern. I do quite a bit of sound testing. 92dB is pretty damn loud. I don't think even drag pipes would register that high at idle. I'm sure plenty of pipes go well beyond that when hard on the throttle, but at idle 92dB would be flat out ridiculous.

Decibels is a logarithmic scale. 3dB points is approximately twice as loud. 92 is twice as loud as 89, and 95 is again twice as loud as 92.

Did the law specify sound POWER or sound PRESSURE? They're both measured in decibels but they are different. It might be worth looking up, cause if any of you guys plan to check you're own bike you'll need to set the meter in the correct mode.

exactly the point i was trying to make earlier,so im sticking with my stock pipes.the "look at me noise" is getting way out of hand.

I don't see how they can give anyone from out of town a ticket. Isn't it kind of like that Myrtle Beach helmet law?
