Default Machining for 30 degree chamber

Just postulating about how hard it would be to cut my own 30 degree chambers. I have a Bridgeport and a rotary table... Being in Canada means outrageous shipping costs and border fees. Hard to justify sending heads out for that. Especially when I have a mill.

That's what i figured. If i use a wide ball end bit on a 30 degree angle, i can get it pretty close to perfect. Hardest part will be measuring to match the piston.

There is probably something better than modeling clay but you get the idea.

Sorry, i don't think i explained what i meant. With a 3.5" bore piston, for example, does the edge of the 30 degree quench pad end at 3.5"? Does it go a few thou wider or narrower due to the gap between piston and wall?

We cut them .030" smaller than the bore size, because the crown of the piston is smaller than the bore. If you cut it at the bore size, you'll never get a tight squish clearance. Getting it centered over the bore is also important.

Thank you for the info. Once the weather ends the bike season here, I'll be ripping my heads off. I'll decide if I want to keep these Edelbrock heads or not (Love the look) and if so, I'll order up a 1275 kit. Unless I screw up my chamber... Then I'll go to 88 or 90cid and retry the chamber again.
