Default Valve guide size?!

How do I determine what size intake/exhaust valve guides are needed for replacements using existing stock valves. 74’ ironhead XLCH. While researching I saw +.10 +.20

Reason I question it is I was blowing a huge amount of blue smoke and oil out of the rear exhaust and thought besides rings that the valve seat may be bad?!

they make .001 and .002 and probably more but do they really need changing????
once the metal is gone, it is gone. i only change IF NEEDED!!!
first measure actual stem clearance to see what you have. bad??? first line of defense is knurl job. if that sinks your boat then>
heat the head in an oven to 400*f and then drift out the old guide, i do this often and a stock guide fits properly but when not, first over size. when installing heat head and freeze guide and drift in, shouldn't take much.

Yes I suppose .001-002 would be the correct sizes. But do I measure the valve stem to determine guide size?! Then decide if it’s .001(most likely)?! If once springs are removed I can then feel if there is slop in the guides. The front cylinder seems fine but I’m gonna hone it anyways(small striations) then check all guides for wear. Rear exhaust valve is showing carbon and oil but not caked on, just wet as blue smoke and oil coming from tail pipe. There was a indentation towards the top of the cylinder wall but rings look good(050) over and no piston damage or crown damage as one would suspect something dropped
Inside. Just strange to see that. So new rear cylinder punched 050 with new pistons/rings and guides if necessary.

Guide size is the OD of the guide itself. Oversize is determined after old guide is driven out and guide hole in head is measured. After guide is installed, size ID of guide for guide-stem fit.
**clean any carbon buildup away prior to driving guide out**
