Default 1966 XLH...sort of

Bike started out as an XLH. Got bounced around, flogged, abused, loved then neglected in the late '80s. Was leaning against the wall in my buddy's garage until this past march.

It needed just about everything except a bottom end and transmission. Three months and about $1500 later she's up and running.

The front wheel was missing 4 spokes and all the remaining ones were rusty. I had good success lacing up the front wheel on my '69 XLCH with Buchanan S/S spokes. Thought I'd try it again and see if luck would hold.

The rim was pretty bent up. I saw this repo rim on the BMI Karts site for $20 + $25 shipping and thought I'd take a chance. It measured out at .004" (+/-) thinner and 8 ozs lighter than the stock one.

It laced up and trued just fine. Been buzzing around on it for a couple of weeks while breaking in the top end. Time will tell....

New Bridgestone Battlax tires f/r, bearings, brakes, cables, etc..

Worked on my rattlecan skills (not!)

Chased bottom leaks...

And a thousand other little things...Switches, buttons, wiring...and during all this tried to stay focused and not be diverted by Nancy and Chuck.

So far so good.

Stripped it first, then a coat of Krylon primer.
Let it set overnight. Then wet sand lightly with 600. Let thoroughly dry then a second coat of primer.
Set overnight, wet sand with 600, let dry.
Then 1st coat of gloss black. Let set overnight. Then lightly wet sand with 600.
Then 2nd coat of gloss black, set overnight, wet sand with 600.
Then 1st coat of clear gloss, set overnight, lightly wet sand with 600.
Then 2nd coat of clear gloss, set overnight, wet sand with 1500.
Final coat of clear gloss. Then let it sit in the sun for a week to dry and harden.

My bike is just a low buck rider. Up close you can see that in the rattle can paint job....there are flaws but I'm ok with it. The paint and the clear are also Krylon from Wal-mart.

My orange '69 XLCH is also a Krylon rattle can job, looks OK....I'm poor.
