It's easy to be a snob and people always think it makes them look cool or extra knowledgeable when they just rip on others' bikes... lame :P

That being said I went to an Indian dealership the other day. I think we can objectively say those are NOT Indians. But I tip my cap to the logo and look.

If it says XLCH it is an XLCH ,,however,they do have purer XLCH genes the older they are ,69's are really great but horseshoe tanks are truly beautiful.at this point I would grab any one that comes along when I have the money,which makes things tough,I'm really not willing to trade for one with my 77, I want my cake and eat it too!

No Matter who We think we are in our Minds Eye....We did Not Create the Thing of our Passion...The MoCo Did it, and they can call 'em anything they want to...Witness the Iron...which certainly looks like an EVO to me!!!!!

I think you're comparing two different things. I don't think anyone is riding an FL out of the showroom and saying it's a panhead. They're both Harleys just as much as any other Harley (One is just just cooler) Same with the XLCH. If someone buys an XL today at my local dealer and pulls up beside me I think it's cool that we're both riding Sportsters.

I do think Indian is a good example... they shut down in 53 and various random people have been squabbling over their logo/trademark and stamping it on bikes they've imported. Now Polaris bought the trademark so that they can stamp Indian onto their classic looking Victory motorcycles.
There's no connection to the original bikes.

I don't think there's anything snobbish about it. It's simply that there are some important differences.

The reason we refer to the 69 and earlier models as the real XLCHs is because after that year all meaningful distinctions between the model H and the model CH are lost. The 70 and later "CHs" are simply H's without electric start.

The 59-69 CH had a short frame, a magneto ignition, different sheet metal from the H, different gearing, and a magneto ignition. These are the features that made the CH what it was.

That doesn't mean we don't like the later bikes; it's simply that after 69 the designation becomes a misnomer. That said, I would never "rip" a 70 or later Sportster.

A 69 CH is worth a good bit more than a 69 H. A 70 CH, however, is worth less than a 70 H. That's because the 70 CH is just a stripped down model H.
