Default Who here knows their triple tree numbers/combinations?

Ok...so I got this 72 xlch. And like a lot of other sportsters, some things have been changed. Like the trees.
My upper is an aluminum piece...45738-62
Looks normal enough. But that number is not in the parts book I have, or not that I can find.
My lower tree is 45707-52a. It isn't drilled for dust boot retainers, but it does have rear ears for such a part. But not front ears. When looking at these trees from the side, there is a noticeable rake. To the point where it looks like fork tubes shouldn't line up, but they do. I think. I mean, tubes go in them.
Are these right for a 72 xlch frame? Are these even a correct set? I don't want any spooky handling...already had my fun with that.
I did some googling, and came up with "raked" trees, but i dont know if that's what all this is or not.

I can't help with what they should be - but for the benefit of others who might be able to comment, it would be a great benefit to have a few pictures of the parts in question - That saves a million questions, back and forth.

If you need help with picture posting, read some of the FAQ/HowTo threads (including how-to post pictures) here:

I'll see what I can do for pictures in the morning.
But with what Tim posted, looks like I need to replace either the top or bottom tree, to have a matched set. Thanks

Numbers you find cast into parts are just casting numbers - not part numbers.

The -62 top clamp was probably used until 1973.

The -52 A is again a casting number.

You probably have the correct parts on there.

I see what you mean "looks like they shouldn't line up"

Apparently it's just a visual altercation.

I can't help about the origin.

I have one and have seen a quite a few lower trees from early 70's bikes with the forward ears cut off. Appears to be a straight factory cut at an attempt to use up old inventory when the got rid of the gaitors. Looks like just what you have there. You should be able to see where the cut was made in the front.

I've got a front end of unknown vintage, because I've never really tried very hard to figure out what it is exactly. 33.4 mm tubes, full drum bkake, later lower legs.

I've got the same lower tree, same casting number. I don't think they ever had the tabs on the front, and the rear is undrilled.

The MoCo probably machined that casting number in a variety of ways over the years, so impossible to tell what you have from the number. I've read that some have the tubes and stem parallel, some not.
