Default Harley Davidson “Hardwire” business plan

Just a short article on the new plan to turn the motor company around. There is still a lot to learn.

It’s doesn’t look good that H-D lost $92 million last quarter and only had yearly revenues of $865 million (not much at all for a global manufacturing company these days).

(Polaris has yearly revenues of $6.7 Billion)

Polaris also makes a lot of other stuff, besides motorcycles. ATVs, Snowmobiles, Watercraft, and so on. If you're going to compare, compare Indian Sales to H-D sales.

When Jackass Wandell killed Buell, back in '09, he greased the slide for this downturn in sales. But he's doing OK; he got his Golden Parachute. H-D is now doing what Indian did back in the 40s. They're letting non enthusiasts run the company. The current CEO was a shoe salesman. He'll really understand the wants and needs of motorcyclists.

Or somethin'.

It’s seems the new CEO Jochen Zeitz major credential is reviving a failing brand. That must be what the board of directors is banking on. I have no idea if he can do it.

I know that Polaris makes a lot of other product, but their size and engineering power makes it possible for them to develop new product that on a performance level, is smoking H-D.

I can see why the motor company struggles to develop new product and mostly relies on refining the same old thing. The “same old” is a good thing, but declining in the market.

Polaris had Victory that went down the tube.

Wasn’t it that they found Indian was a better brand strategy?

First thing to go in a cash crunch is usually R & D. So they will likely have to soldier on with existing products for the most part.

Wonder if that means they will pull the plug on the Live Wire. (Sorry couldn't resist.)

Well...not really. They just killed it in favor of 'their' new brand:

"Polaris surprised the industry in January 2011 when it announced that it would shut its homegrown motorcycle brand, Victory, and focus entirely on Indian, a company it bought in 2011. "

From your article “Victory ended 2016 up 7 percent in sales, but it wasn’t profitable,” Mr. Wine said. “Winding it down made sense in terms of allocating capital and engineering resources.”
