Default No power, battery is good, fuses are fine, whats wrong?

hi guys,

I need help, my 2001 XL1200 is dead, key is at the on position but there is no power, no light, no anything. Battery is fully charged, terminal connected tight, fuses are all pulled out and checked, but there is no power. I have no idea where else to check.

I suspect it could be caused by a spot light I recently installed as the headlight. A friend did warned me to turn off the spot light before hitting the ignition button, as the spot light could draw too much power and cause problem, but I forgot, the bike is dead as soon as i hit the ignition button. Could the spot light be the reason? If so, where to I start?

Also, another problem could be the key module, as it is not stock, is there any way I can check if the key module is the culprit?

Be Patient, Be Accurate, Be Methodical & Be Thorough...
Here are two links that are a starting point -

When you're having issues with the electrical system, use this Sportsterpedia section about
checking the battery cables, voltages and grounds - DO THIS BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE:

On the 2001, the ground wires are on the upper REAR motor mounts...

The main protection is a Circuit Breaker (which should reset when the overload is gone) - So, disconnect your SPOTLIGHT/Headlight - Then try again...

Power comes from the battery, thru the Main CB, to the Keyswitch - The Keyswitch, when ON, feeds the various circuit fuses...

Use a multimeter set on the 20v DC scale - Check for power at the Main CB (in & out) & at the Keyswitch (in & out)...

You DO have a manual, right? Are you able to follow the schematic?

Thank you so much sir! I do have some experience with the electrical on my Japanese bikes, but this is the first time i'm working on a Harley, so never had experience with circuit breaker .... but please bare with me sir.

I pulled out the battery to give it a full charge, planning to give it a try later today, will disconnect the spotlight first.

In and out, means both 'legs' of the CB? Keyswitch has 3 wires though ... I don't have the manual yet .... where can i find one? and yeap i can follow wiring schematic. =)

Keyswitch (stock wiring):
One wire incoming from the Main CB (RED)
Two wires outgoing - one to the Acc fuse (RED/Gray) & one to the other 3 fuses (RED/Black)

If the Keyswitch checks out - then you should have power on the incoming side of the fuses...


Check eBay for manuals - and Craigslist in your local area - do a google search - Just note, HD does not authorize CD copies of their manuals, so any CD version you find are likely violating copyrights (FYI)...
