Default Harley Davidson Sportster: 60 years by Allan Girdler

Not sure how many are aware of this book, it was written in 2017 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Sportster.

The book begins with some history to show the roots of the Sportster, and moves forward through time with literally hundreds of detailed full color photographs of restored and/or original examples of the motorcycles mentioned in each chapter. The photos alone are worth the price of the book. Pretty much every model from 1952 to 2017 is shown, with only a few exceptions.

The text is well written, entertaining, and informative. Mr. Girdler is a fan as well as former editor of Cycle World, and has owned many Harley Davidson products since the early '50's. There ARE some typographical errors...in one place "blow" and "flow" are interchanged...in others numbers are incorrect (stock wheel size for a particular motorcycle in one case was described incorrectly...in another case the reported 1/4 mile time seems to be accidentally repeated from another motorcycle), but for the most part it's factual and fair.

My Roadster is a ‘17 and I was 60 in ‘17, my father was 60 when he passed away and I remember when I was a teenager standing in the front yard, helmet on, motocross bike leaning on a tree, a Harley went by and he asked me “when are you gonna get a Harley?” so ‘17 was the year and I got the book too. I’ve read it 4 or 5 times, sits on the coffee table. I still open it now and then. Great book!

It's excellent. Very good quality all.
Excellent photographs, excellent content, 176 pages, excellent paper.

Not a bad book, not a great book, but a nice addition to the collection. I got a used hardcover copy (Amazon) after reading this thread. The forum cost me money again...

Great photos. Clearly, I'm getting old, but those early XLCH models look the finest to my eyes. Kinda like a mid-60s Triumph Bonnevillle, when you could see through them. 50-year-old bikes that look better than the current ones. I guess the trade-off is better brakes, technology, electrics, quality control, gasket tightness, reliability...

But apart from better brakes, technology, electrics, quality control, gasket tightness, reliability, what have the Romans ever done for us?
