Did you set the float height by-the-book? Did you test to see if it was closing completely?

Set the float to where it is fully closed - Then gently blow down the fuel line to see if you're getting any air past the valve...

If the float is not closing fully, you may be getting extra fuel pushed thru jets...

You should check everything from the cap vent, tank vent, petcock, etc., all the way thru the fuel supply...

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on the CV40 Carb:

Hey IXL, I have been busy so I haven't been able to get at it until yesterday. I did set the float of my CV carb by the book. I pulled another CV carb from my buddies shop from a running sporty and threw it on my bike.. no dice so I tried a 3rd cv carb, same thing. I am still having the black smoke spitting out, bogging, low power, then cut out problem.

I am thinking now the carb is getting too much fuel and it's just choking out. Another really interesting thing is that I pulled my dipstick while the bike was cold and I am low on oil.. The level wasn't hitting the dipstick at all though there is oil in the bag. Last oil change was a few months ago and I put in the amount listed in the book, I am also running an oil cooler. Maybe I am burning oil with the fuel it's like super black/brown smoke? I am thinking it's not really electrical anymore since i've replaced the ignition module and coil (twice) and it's something wrong with the fuel delivery and/or carb (although i have tried 2 different cv cabrs now..). I have an aftermarket petcock on there with no vacuum line. Could it be a bad VOES?

I will try setting the float like that and blowing down the fuel line.

I don't see anywhere that you did a proper compression test - Did you?

If not, do that now...!!!
