only if it was a 90 degree zerk.the one's i've seen have been straight.i think you were on the right track offsetting the weight only it would be the weight of the grease fitting rather than the valve stem.

I was thinking it was used to hold the hub for the drilling/tapping of the zirk hole, and maybe some of the other procedures in the manufacturing.
