Default Click, Click, Click of the relay

I read somewhere here on the forum a while back that a common fix for starter relay clicking is a good clean ground. I can start the bike when dead cold with no issues but occasionally after a good long ride, I'd stop to fuel up or park it for a bit and when I get back on, the relay clicks with no power to the solenoid to turn the bike over. I've replaced the relay 3 times so I don't feel like the relay is the issue. Am I thinking correctly that ground may be the issue? Anyone else have this issue? If I had a kick start, I'd be happy. The times this has happened away from home, I've had to bump start it which is fine but a little embarrassing.

Thanks,

How do you know that no power is getting to the solenoid? Do you have a voltmeter with you to know for sure that nothing's getting to it? I'd be checking the entire electrical path from starter relay to solenoid, including wiring, connectors, etc with a voltmeter while the problem is happening.

Electrical things can certainly have heat-related problems, you just have to find out if it's multiple bad starter relays, wiring, or a bad solenoid.

But none of those things should be getting hot just from riding. So I would lean more toward loose or poor connections in the wiring, myself.

Good luck in finding this, these intermittent problems can be a bear to find and fix.

Probably not ground, since the starter and its solenoid ground through the starter body to the engine. I'd check the positive cable between battery and starter - I had a similar problem once because the cable rattled loose on the starter end.

Thanks for the tips. I will check all connections tomorrow. They’re calling for temps n the 50s Sunday. I’ll spend some time outside with her.

I would suspect the solenoid is going bad.

When you ride the bike and it gets hot and then you stop it for a short time you get what we refer to as "heat soak".

If you let it cool down long enough the relay will work again.

A bad ground is always a bad ground. Hot ore cold.
