#52 goes around the support tube pointing up. #51 goes around the exhaust pipe sticking down. The tabs are facing each other and get bolted together.

I put the mid bracket on the front pipe this morning.maybe i'll post a pic.it's the same side as the other 2 pics.i checked out the location for the mid bracket on the rear pipe,it's only about 6'' away from the rear one.seems unnecessary and overkill.i needed the mid bracket on the front pipe because it got blown off twice when I jump on it hard.donr's port work and the 1-3/4'' R exhaust valves made a big difference in the exhaust flow out of the pipes.

I would be interested to hear from Don on the nature of the porting of the XLR heads.
I'm guessing that they were originally ported by Branch for the factory, and that served them well for TTs and other off-road events of the time?

I am curious as to what was done by him (without giving away too much proprietary info) to the existing port job to change it. What was your stated purpose of the work, Bruce? To gain a faster street machine with power further down the band, or to flow even more air for a stroker, or?

It sure would be interesting to know a bit more about the difference and results of the different styles of porting.

And more pics of that sweet machine certainly couldn't hurt!

faster street machine yes,but mostly the port flow(cfm)needed to be increased to match the larger displacement.Don told me the XLR heads were fine for a 900,but not a 1200.i found the o.e.m. bracket for the rear pipe.maybe I can make that work.it will make the pipe lower which might cause kick lever interference.which is why the bracket I have on there now is on.

i tried the o.e.m. bracket at the end of the rear pipe.no dice.the pipe runs too high for it.the reproduction XLR pipes don't fit as well as the o.e.m.raining this morning,so no riding to work, which means no pic today.maybe tomorrow.

Regarding the head work. It's like Bruce said, the XLR heads are optimized for a 900cc engine.

For a 1200 , 10 to 12 more cfm is required to make good power up to 6500 rpm.

The larger motor also likes a little more port volume. The Branch heads are technically correct shape-wise so it's just a matter of carefully scaling them up for more volume and flow while keeping the width , height , and valve bowl of the ports in proportion .

Sounds simple enough.
