Default Fact or fiction?

As I read up iron heads and learning more about them is it true that a stock 1968 Ironhead topped out at 118 miles an hour?

come see/come saw
take print material with a grain of salt
i find the iron to be tempermental
some days a pigeon and some days a statue
the fastest the 1974ch has been is 133mph barring any restriction (aka, open road and time)
will it do 118, probably so, with consistency, probably not

It's very hard to know the truth.

You cannot go by what the Speedo says. They aren't accurate.

Cycle world did a "shootout" around that time but the Sportster listed was a "cheater".
Apart from which you could never trust cycle mags at the time.

But you can always make one go that fast if you want to.

On my Triumph street Triple, at speeds around 75 80 mph it almost impossible to hang on, the wind blast is tremendous, the bike top speed is around 150 ,

so i would expect it to be even more on the harley at those speeds ,and it is, with wide bars ,andi dont think my Xl C will get any where near 118mph

I'm a little curious about some of the high numbers posted.

It takes some serious power to overcome the drag coefficient of a non-streamlined conventional bike chassis.
