I probably should apologize to the HD company of 60 years ago.

While I do poke fun at them, these are very old motorcycles now, most having passed through many hands and not all of them A grade mechanics.

They were built long before CNC tooling and had to be built at a price that made a profit. They were "mass produced" and intended to be used as every day transport.

In Australia, when they were new, almost no one could afford them.

I can't imagine anyone ordering a new bike and waiting 12 months for delivery these days.

Apart from some specialized parts I always opt for NOS OEM parts when I can get them. Simply because I know they will fit and they are a known quality. A/M parts are sometimes not much better than junk. Strange considering the machine tools and processes available today.

And compared to say, Norton's offerings of the same period (not to mention Triumph) they were of a higher standard.

For many years here you could buy a Sportster, ride it for a few years and sell it for more than you paid for it.

Numeric Control in machining has been around since the 1950s.

yes, but not the computer numeric controlled (CNC) machines they have today.

When you see what a $40K Chinese machining center can do these days it's just mind boggling.

Today's machinists need to be really good with computers, software and programming.

Yeh

Three weeks on a Bridgeport with a volstro head to do what a three-axis CNC can do in 1/2 hour

I worked with guys that were in the German army WW2. Damn they were good.

What!

There's a difference between a machine operator, a set-up operator, and a programmer?

Say it ain't so.

Had a call from my buggy whip manufacturer yesterday. He's considering getting his product made in china.

Didn't have the heart to tell him.
