Default Stuck in fist after a spill

I have a 79 sporty 1000 that was dropped on the left side, the bike shifted down into neautral after the crash but is now shifted and stuck in first. I have the transmission out on the bench but nothing looks broken. I think my problem is in the shifter pawl area...do the fingers shift and hold the drum or is something else supposed to do the job? How do you upload a photo? When you try to shift up it's like nothing is there.

Check the selector shaft, dropped mine on ice early this year & jammed it in first, shaft was bent

It looks like the shifter may have popped out of the carrier pawl...what keeps that shaft connected to the pawl? I don't see anything inside the pawl that looks broken...maybe the ball and socket are worn beyond tolerance or the bushing inside the case is no good? The bike went down hard enough to bend the forward controls back 3 inches so maybe that was enough to pop the shifter shaft out of its socket?
