Default 1986 1100 butterfly carb on going problems

Hi guys
Plugs are good timing is adjusted per spec and spot on
62 slow jet 1 ½ turns out mixture
180 main
Andrews acc pump upgrade
Standard pipes but drilled out

Idle is still rough as

Everything above 2500 is fine
Accelerates cleanly
But cruising around is not smooth constant surges
Just about had it with this Butterfly carb
Put 200 plus in trying to make it work
Wanted to keep everything standard as it’s a liberty version
Any help , direction , or advice on maybe new carb I would like to keep my original air cleaner if possible but I just want to ride this thing now

I use a S&S B when I feel like you do. That said. Have you tried the forum "Google custom search "

at the bottom of the page to find the stickies on your carb yet?

Check the VOES to make sure it's working correctly. Is the butterfly shaft loose in its mounting holes? Low-speed carb circuit dirty, float level incorrect, tank vent stopped up? You say everything above 2500 is fine, but cruising around isn't. Is that cruising above or below 2500 rpm?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

yeah cruising below 2500 and Idle
checked voes seems to be working but was disconnected
and the voes spigot plugged for some reason from the PO
exhaust is original except drilled out
has an Andrews after market accelerator pump
bike has only 2700 original miles on it

Might be an intake leak. If it still has the vile stock rubber boot compliance fittings they harden with age. You can buy aftermarket compliance fittings to keep it looking original.

Hello Flam...

Rough idle can be air leak. Find that by spraying wd-40 around the carb or manifold area and listen for a change of rpm.

Jetting depends on location (altitude, and Temp & moisture of the air). Accel pump only matter a little as when cruising steady it's shouldn't be squirting.

On my '86 (1100) with butterfly, I'm running 185 / 74, stock pump. I'm eastern Pa at about 500 foot elevation, and the humidity of the east coast of US.

How did I come to these jets. The old school way. Buy several jets and get a set of micro drills . Then setting the low first. Put in the next size up and ride a few miles. Then the next and repeat until the "next" size starts to carbon the plugs, then put the last size back in. Then do same to set the main. NOTE with the main you have to do WOT more.

My jet sizes in my setting of the carb were :
OEM-52, 62, 71, 74 and 79 (which was too much).
(originally bought 54, 56, 60, 62 but drilled the 54, 56 & 60)

OEM-155, 165, 170, 178, 185 and 193 (which was to much) and a 200 which I didn't need to try.
(originally bought 3 165 & 3 170's and drilled the other sizes)

I'm getting about 54 MPG highway, 35-40 city (depending on the smile factor). My plugs were a nice tan color, until I did my "Poor-man's Hyper-Ham-Can" mod (http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread...11#post3204111) which turned the plugs white again. (Note: pictures are down lower in the thread).
