Handlebars
Hi, my 1989 Hugger has buckhorn pullback (stock) handlebars which are not very comfortable. I would like to change to stock non-hugger bars which have less rise and go out wider. There are a million choices out there but most of those don't come drilled for the wire loom retainers or don't have the little indentations for the wiring where it meets the controls. If there is anyone with a suggestion on where I might find some of the correct ones, please let me know. I have tried ebay and craigslist to no avail. Thanks.

You can check with your local dealer , or independent shop, for take offs and put in a WTB,( wanted to buy), request on site. You could also search recent threads where members have gone to optional handlebars, ape hangers come to mind, and sent a p.m. inquiring if the have their take off and if it’s availible?

Most aftermarket handlebars come both in dimpled and non-dimpled versions.
Also try HD bars from a Dyna. Many are similar to XL ones but wider.
On my 2001 1200s I used 2001 FXDXT bars. Same basic shape (not buckhorns)
but 2" wider.

I found the stock 883R bars to be very comfortable. They are wider than buckhorns but lower and look and feel like the Western bars I used to have on my BSA & Triumphs in the 70s. Plenty original & aftermarket bars with & without dimples

They're not drilled for wire loom retainers because they're meant to be wired internally. Much neater look. Lots of good choices out there. Maybe some Z bars?

I have Biltwell "Chumps". They come with the indents for the switch wires but don't come with holes for the wire retainers. These holes would have to be drilled, yourself, as the handlebar manufacturers give You the option of using retainers, where you would like them placed, or running the wires internally (as Gunner pointed out). I used zip-ties as drilling the holes for the retainers would be a PITA. If I were to drill, it would have been to run the wires inside the handlebars.

Welcome to the XLForum.
Try sitting on several bikes at the dealer.

Riding comfort is not just a matter of products - but also positioning...
Determine where you want your controls - Forward, mid, rear - customized?
Then pick a seat that puts your butt where you need it for leg positioning and cushy comfort.
Then put your arms out at the position you believe is most comfortable and take some measurements for rise, pullback & width.
Altering any of these positions will affect your overall riding comfort.
Pick the right combination & your legs and back will appreciate it - Pick any one wrong position and you'll be looking to park every 15-minutes.
