I've owned the bike since last July and between doing some mods right after I first got it and this most recent tear-down I've put right around 1,000 miles on it. It's possible there was oil leaking out of the trans vent but to be honest I never knew there even was a trans vent until I tore it down a couple of months ago. I changed the engine oil and it made me wonder why the oil looked black after a couple hundred miles. More than I would have thought but this is my first H-D so there's a lot that I don't know about how this is supposed to be. It also seems strange that when I drained the primary it wasn't overfull. My oil tank level stayed within the expected range on the dipstick. PO replaced the clutch fiber and steel plates just before I bought it, along with the starter, but he wouldn't have to pull the crank sprocket for that. Maybe he did and thats when the crank seal went missing, but I doubt I'll ever know.
