You should look at oil pump breather timing and cam timing as 2 separate things. Time the pump first with no cams installed. When that is done you can completely ignore the pump position and install the cams, lining up the cam marks without any regard to pump timing and flywheel advance mark.

You’re meaning to turn the motor over until the vertical line is centered in the timing hole, then slipping on the spiral gear to center the oil hole, correct? Because that’s what I did first before installing the cams.
The oil hole was not centered in the notch when the vertical line was centered in the timing hole, so that’s why I had to remove the pinion gear to get everything set up.

After setting the 5/16 dimension spin the motor a couple of revolutions to allow the spiral gear and the oil pump gear to mesh and align. Then recheck the breather timing. If you have it your done.
