Go to Home Depot or Lowes. Buy a 4" utility spring. I have an extra one if you want me to mail it to you. Forget the HD replacement, it probably won't pull the stand up tight against the bumper. The 4" spring pulls up tight, install was easy. Pull the rubber bumper off and you can rotate the stand to make install really easy. Just get a helper to hold the bike upright, then you can get under and change the spring.
Your bike is like mine, no bushings.

I have a spare one from the 2 pack I bought, shoot me your address again and I can send it to you. Trust me, the 4" spring is superior to the stock piece of junk.

Thank you John. The problem isn't the stand not pulling up tight to the bumper, it is that it doesn't give me a lot of confidence when I kick it in the down position. I just think some day it isn't going to stay there and I will drop the bike.
I don't know if the original one is bad or not, or if it is just a poor design. My other bike snaps down nice and I have never worried about it.
I have a Home Depot just a couple of miles from me, I can snag one there, but thank you for the offer.

I replaced mine because the stand was hanging loosely, now it comes up against the stop.

My kickstand has 2 holes on it. Moved spring to other hole and kickstand is now snug up against the rubber. Top of kickstand is kind of sloppy but so was my 79 shovelhead. Never had any problems. Roger
