What I am trying to convey is John is looking to set the sag to 1.2" but the way most advocate setting sag that will not be correct unless the shocks are vertical.

You need to know how much usable shock shaft travel you have, or how much wheel travel. They usually aren't the same.

Indeed, I thought I made that point when asking if the shock is at an angle? And all John appears to have is shock travel.

I think all I can adjust is the preload, and there are just 5 settings. So, it's probably going to be a compromise either way. I don't have infinitely adjustable preload on these shocks. More expensive shocks may have that feature. Monoshock dirtbikes often adjust with a threaded ring so you have more tunable preload.

I hope it doesn't end up being a compromise. I find all these experiments so expensive.
I have Progressive 430 shocks but for me the spring rate seems wrong or the damping is wrong. Many a time I have been pinged out of the seat.
I also got a set with heavy duty springs for the occasions when taking a pillion but she went and got her own machine so I don't need them either!
I really hope you can find a good setting.

Yep. Just bolt 'em on and check to see how much they compress with you on the bike. 1" - 1.2" would be a good place to start then you go for a ride, see how they feel and adjust as you see fit.
I went back and found the spring rate my Ohlins have. They're 85/137 lb/in springs. I corrected my previous post. Really close to your 79/130 lb/in rate and appropriate as my rubbermount Sportster is heavier. My 85/137 springs are the "light" springs Ohlins supplies for riders 195 lbs or less. 91/148 and 102/154 being their heavier options FWIW.

Shock angle doesn't matter in the context of what we're doing. There are two ways to get to the same place.
If you go by 1/3 of wheel travel you do a vertical measurement.
If you go by 1/3 of usable shock travel you measure shock shaft travel.

And because "all he has" is the shock shaft travel spec that is what he needs to measure to check / set his initial preload.

Any idea what your spring rates actually are beyond Standard or Heavy Duty?

How much do you weigh and how much do your shocks compress or the rear of your bike sag with you on the bike?

Does anyone know how much travel the stock 13.25" shocks have? Just for baseline.
John
