It depends upon the dealer. Probably the safest way (as far as preserving the warranty is concerned) is to have the dealer do it but it won't be as much fun and it will cost more. You could always do it yourself but keep all of the stock parts to put it back together in the event that you later had engine related warranty problems.

I installed a Figure Machine R5, Fuel Moto Micro EFI and Rush slip ons (1.75 baffles) on my 2013 XL1200c. My bike runs great-significantly cooler, with no throttle lag. My seat of the pants Dyno tells me the bike is far more lively.

When I bought my Ironhead it already came with drag pips, but the intake was stock (bike would sputter and lag if I cracked the throttle). Over the winter I add a high flow intake and 10mm screaming eagle sparkplug cables. The combination has made a big difference, one you can really feel when you crack the throttle (instant power, no lag).
In 30 min. I can return the bike to stock with no harm done to the motor. It’s the least evasive performance mod you can do.

My question is this: How, in your opinion, does a stage one affect the long range reliability and durability of the motor. I get the impression that many seem to think the factory setup is choked solely to meet EPA regulations and that a stage one is necessary for "proper" performance. I realize that no sporty, especially an 883 remains completely stock for very long, but I am only refering to engine modifications. Any opinions?

Back to the original post of Feb 11, 2006, the common answer is yes, the H-D setup is literally choked due to EPA and paying the Harley tax is necessary for reasonable performance.
