Trying the Mahle filter at the moment, spec'd for Harleys but i cannot find micron size, the only worry is the size of the oil flow holes in the plate.
Stock Harley on the left has far larger/more holes.
What do you think?

The area of the output of the filter (using 3/4" diameter) is less than 1/2" sq.

6 - 5/16 holes would equal the area of the out put.

I was out and about last week and stopped at a local Independent motorcycle shop, to see how business is. He's only open from noon to 5pm til March. I figured I'd pick up an oil filter for my next oil change. I bought a Drag Specialties chrome one and it has the six-hole and look of the filter on the right in post#1. Still made in Taiwan, but has a number change (fits 1986-2019 XL). I had been buying HD chrome oil filters, but they're the same price now. Never had a problem with either filter.

Looking at Mahle's web site, they look well put together so i will use them.
The results of Shanneba's oil sample was an eye opener, piss poor results from what you expect to be superior filters.

Bloody stock Harley filter was better!
Are these Mahle filters available in the states? Would like to see test results of them.

Glad you are doing these Shanneba, although it's hard to believe the HD5 and WIX are so poor especially at the 4,6,14 and 21 micron size, and you would not expect to see any 38 and 70 microns in them.

My Samples are taken from the oil tank so the oil has been through the engine and returned to the tank.

I would expect the vast majority of particles larger than 20 microns to be trapped by the filter on the next pass.

The HD 5 micron did better than the standard HD Sportster filter especially at 4 and 6 microns but not quite as well as the Mobil 1 filter.

I ran accross a Virgin OIl Analysis with a particle count.
It gives a little insight into how much of the particles are from combustion byproducts.

This was Mobil 1 0w-40:
https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum...30#Post4988238

I combined the various particle count into sizes to match my particle counts and ISO - 3 cleanliness codes.

The ISO-3 code on the new oil appears to be 20/18/14.
My first Mobil1 filter run was 24/18/14.

Each increase of 1 in the ISO code indicates a doubling of the number of particles.

http://www.precisionfiltration.com/p...SO%20Codes.pdf

Code:
virgin 0w-40
9442.0	4 Micron
2127.0	6 Micron
651.0	14 Micron
11.0	21 Micron
3.0	38 Micron
	70 Micron
